What a spectacular site for skiing, and scenery... and a snow garden, all in the famed resort of SuperDévoluy or Pra Loup, one of the biggest in the southern Alps. It's only 300 metres from Le Hameau du Puy to the nearest slopes, part of a ski and winter sports region making up 2,000 hectares of snow and descents. You'll be coming back to a mighty cosy setting after your days out and about: Le Hameau du Puy is a hamlet of ski chalets and lodges, on a scenic site facing the Dauphiné Alps peak of the Pic de Bure opposite. The excellent facilities include a snow garden and shops, as well as a sauna and heated indoor pool both free for guests' use. There's a sports centre next door with climbing wall and Nordic area if you yearn for yet more activity; if not, spectacular mountain scenery is all around the site – even, as you'll see, from the indoor pool... The nearest train station is Veynes Dévoluy.

Local attractions

The Hautes-Alpes ski resort of SuperDévoluy is connected in winter by tracks to the Joue du Loup, forming the Dévoluy ski area. The region has 2,000 hectares of snow and 100 kilometres of descents including 37 kilometres of artificial snow. A further 35 kilometres of cross-country ski trails for skating and alternative skiing are on the Nordic side. Ski buses take skiers around the stations and a bus service Marseille Provence airport and Aix TGV station runs to the area every Saturday in winter. For winter walks, take the Taisson route developed by the resort, a virtual GPS assistant with audio, films and photos covering two circuits. The device is available to borrow at the tourist office and in the ski chalets. Alps 'capital' Grenoble is an hour and three quarters away via the A51, or two hours by the Route de Grenoble.
