  • Dog-friendly off-grid pitches 10 minutes’ drive away from Hay-on-Wye
  • Under two miles from Bannau Brycheiniog National Park (Brecon Beacons)
  • In the grounds of a school with mountain views; short walk from a pub
‘Back to school’ has a whole new meaning at Camping at Gwernyfed in Powys, a dog-friendly site set in the grounds of a school campus with a mansion and stunning grounds. No studying required – unless, of course, you pick up a few page-turners when you’re wandering around the bookshops of Hay-on-Wye, which is 10 minutes’ drive away. This is a fab basecamp if you’re going to be attending The Hay Festival of Literature & Arts; the festival site is only a 10-minute drive from campus. In Hay-on-Wye, there are over 20 bookshops, gorgeous tea rooms and other shopping paraphernalia to get your hands on. If you’re outdoorsy, Camping at Gwernyfed is a good choice too. The off-grid pitches have mountain views, as they are under two miles from the edge of Bannau Brycheiniog National Park (the Brecon Beacons). An outdoor activity centre is a 15-minute walk away where guests can book activities like gorge walking and caving or hire a canoe or kayak to explore the nearby river Wye. The local area is really quite stunning. Glasbury, set on the river Wye, is only five minutes’ drive away. There’s also a pub just 15 minutes’ walk away and a walled garden five minutes’ walk away. The ruined Clifford Castle is a 20-minute drive away. The site has a private car park, as well as a relaxing balcony area. There is also a toilet and shower block. Dogs are very welcome.
