  • Rural dog-friendly site on the Duke of Devonshire’s estate
  • In the Yorkshire Dales, a short walk from Simon's Seat and the river
  • Alpacas on site and within walking distance of two pubs and a café
Oh, to be in the rural Yorkshire Dales, sipping on a brew surrounded by Howgill Lodge’s three resident alpacas on the Duke of Devonshire’s Bolton Abbey Estate. Built into the hillside, the terraces are separated by dry stone walls and all spots have simply stunning views of green slopes. This may be a spectacularly rural spot, but there’s no shortage of stuff to get up to locally, whether you're watching the friendly resident alpacas tuck into their breakfast, taking a wild dip in the river Wharfe 10 minutes’ walk from the site or tracking down a pint of something in one of two traditional Yorkshire pubs half an hour’s walk away (one of these serves real ales and good food, and has a lush beer garden, by the way…) Jo and Rich, the friendly staff at this dog-friendly site, have heaps of local knowledge. Let them dish out the goss on the area's walks, cycle routes and attractions as well as the top local places for food and drink (such as the café five minutes’ walk away for a choc brownie and milkshakes). You'll need all the calories if you're setting forth for Yorkshire Dales walks like Simon's Seat… It really doesn’t matter whether you’re after an action-packed getaway with the kids or a quiet wildlife retreat with loved ones and your canine companion – both are easily achievable here. And either way, modern, high-quality facilities on site include hot showers, laundry facilities and washing-up sinks.

Electric gravel motorhome pitch (small)

Liked: Sehr schöne Einrichtungen, ordentlich und sauber. Toll, dass man Feuer machen darf. Die Gegend ist wunderschön, aber der Platz liegt sehr weit außerhalb und ist nicht einfach zu erreichen.

Electric grass tent pitch (large)

Liked: This was our second stay at Howgill and if possible it exceeded expectation. From arrival, the staff on reception checked us in with a wealth of local and site information. The pitch was in great condition despite recent poor weather and the shower and toilet facilities are the best I’ve ever come across. We made use of the washing up and fridge facilities which were also fantastic.

Electric gravel touring pitch

Liked: Amazing views and probably the best pitch on the site. Staff very helpful and clearly very hardworking as the site and facilities are well maintained and clean. Beautiful river walk within distance and the superb Love Brownies. The secure dog play area is a winner. Apart from the unseasonal weather , everything was perfect.

Electric grass tent pitch (medium)

Liked: Excellent toilet, shower and washing up block. Best of my week in 4 different locations 👍 Excellent pitch at the end of the bottom row, great view. Even though it was very busy with families it certainly wasn’t noisy Great reception area too, very welcoming arrival and clear guidance about the site and where to live

Disliked: Not a dislike just feedback about the WiFi strength. It’s awesome that a campsite has WiFi so it isn’t a complaint. Having the luxury of WiFi means you’re expectations are raised that it will be stable and strong

Liked: Fantastic views from hillside terraced site. Immaculately clean facilities; great little shop and barista coffee and warm croissants in the morning. Very good dog walk paddock. Lots of long walks nearby

Disliked: It was busy but for August not surprising

Local attractions

If one morning you feel inspired to go strolling, there’s no need to pack up the car. The path to Simon's Seat (half an hour’s walk to the top) is barely a couple minutes' stroll from the site and has simply grand views of the Yorkshire Dales. Carry on rambling into the surrounding moors, where there’s a waterfall dubbed ‘the valley of desolation’. There’s not much desolation around, but there is a gorgeous waterfall and a pool to wade in. A short drive will get you to local villages or towns like Grassington (20 minutes' drive), which has art galleries, a cobbled market square and e-bike hire, and Skipton (20 minutes), which has a castle and heaps of eateries. Another good outing is the Stump Cross Caverns (10 minutes). Discovered by lead miners in the mid 1860s, the cave complex has a cinema and exhibits including prehistoric remains of wolverine and reindeer. The caverns have a hilltop walk, but if you’re still in the mood for more good walks, excellent trails include those around the half-mile-long limestone gorge at Troller's Gill (10 minutes) and Rylstone Cross (25 minutes).
