Sifting through listings to find a base for a walking and cycling trip in the forests and hilly landscapes of South Limburg? Camping Hitjesvijver has you covered either way: this site a five-minute walk from the village of Heerlerheide – for sorting supplies and visiting the market on Friday afternoons – has a good stack of modern amenities, including a heated swimming pool and paddling pool as well as indoor and outdoor games. Places for keeping cosy at this park include the heated bathrooms and the brasserie with its open fireplace; if it’s too warm outside for basking beside a blaze, the terrace is a grand spot for dining and drinks. The kids can take their pick from a covered area with a playhouse, pool table and table football, or an open-air sports field – plenty of space to keep even the ficklest small human entertained while you unwind. For grownups, a badminton court, table tennis and a couple of pétanque areas are set up for games; there’s also evening entertainment – don’t miss the disco – and after-dark swimming sessions for moonlight activities. If you’re more of an 'early to bed and early to rise' kind of traveller, you might want to set the alarm clock for the crack of dawn to pack in all the things to do and see in the local area. The city of Heerlen’s a 10-minute drive from this site and it’s no exaggeration to say it probably does have something for everyone. Slide over to SnowWorld Landgraaf for the indoor ski slope, ride to Kinderstad Heerlen for the kids’ rollercoasters, or see the animals roar at Mondo Verde zoo (all within 15 minutes). For adult activities to suit historical aficionados, the Thermenmuseum is the place to roam around the ruins of Roman bathhouses, and Hoensbroek Castle – one of the biggest in the Netherlands – puts on tours of this moated 13th-century structure (both are 10 minutes away from the site). Kids might be swayed into coming along on a trip to the castle when they find out about the medieval fancy dress options… or you could just drop them off at the skatepark in Heerlen while you explore without any risk of moaning and groaning.
