Pampering time is on the menu at Kehida Termál Adventure Bath and Spa (a 10-minute drive) – it’s got a fitness room, several indoor and outdoor pools, a waterslide, hot tub, sauna and steam rooms, and you can treat yourself to all sorts of massage and beauty treatments.

Continue the wellness vibe with a dip in Lake Hévíz (10 minutes) – simply float around in the warm water and let the therapeutic power of the thermal lake do its thing.

Speaking of lakes, for a glimpse of the freshwater Lake Balaton (it’s a biggun, believed to be the largest lake in Central Europe), a visit to Keszthely (15 minutes) is a fine choice. As well as exploring the waterfront and small beaches, the city is also a great place for a dose of culture. A scattering of museums includes all manner of exhibits: toys, horror, the lake, cars, erotica, agriculture… There’s also the 100-room Festetics Palace, which houses the Helikon Palace Museum and Helikon Library.

For more cultural sights, head to the ruins of Tátika Castle (half an hour), or the rather more intact Castle of Sümeg (35 minutes).

Adventure days can be had at Gyenesdiás Eco Adventure Park (20 minutes), with obstacle courses through the trees, or Lake Cave Tapolca (40 minutes), where you can take a boat trip through the underground caverns.
