There's certainly ample space for family stays at Shirleywich Farm Holidays, where seven out of the site's 17 acres have been turned over to folks looking to pitch up – that's about 41% of the total, or just over five football pitches if sporting analogies speak to you more than figures do. Whichever way you run the numbers, this easily accessed site equals one stonkingly good spot for varied Staffordshire stints. Shirleywich Farm Holidays is a secure site, accessed via a lockable gate, and is just off the A51. These grounds are kept in tiptop shape by the site crew, who ensure the hedgerows are neat and the field in good condition. Also around are five old barns and a handsome farmhouse dating back to the 1600s. Pets large (horses) and less large (dogs) are welcome here, with lots of bridleways and pup-friendly paths on hand in the nearby Cannock Chase Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The facilities here are on the low-key end of the spectrum: there's a gravel amenities area with a portable toilet, toiletry supplies and a chemical disposal point. Bring bikes, canoes and fishing rods along to Shirleywich Farm Holidays – the adjacent Trent and Mersey canal towpath and the river Trent, a few metres further away, should sort you out with bags of opportunities to put all three to use. Heading south along the water's edge, you'll soon reach Great Haywood, a village a couple of miles downstream where there's an independent café and small supermarket (five minutes' drive).

喜欢: Nothing to dislike Able to pitch anywhere, small tidy site Super friendly hosts All we needed for a nights pitch A field quite wet but expected we’re in Weston Horse, ducks pheasant and puddles 😊 No water hole we knew that before. We collected on way and the shops are not far including chip shops within 8min drive We didn’t use Wi-Fi so no comment No activities but it camp not activity camp we didn’t expect this neither , plenty to do in the area if you wanted. Busy road day and night but not enough to damping our fun Fire pits all around Toilet area for my favouring was me a little to close to main road 😕but clean plenty amenities provided and clean smell free 👍🏾

喜欢: Lovely Camping ground that was so peaceful, relaxing and very clean and tidy. Nick and Rachel were so accommodating and helpful with local attractions to keep kids entertained. The horses and pony were so friendly and was such an experience for kids to be able to get up close and feed them, thanks to Rachel for leaving food out for them for our arrival. Overall a 10 out of 10 place for our family and will definitely be returning in the future. Thanks

喜欢: Open Field, great views - Small villages close by with good pubs. Called the owner a couple of times who was helpful. Very Good, need to be set up as of Grid however amenity provided was very clean.

喜欢: Very friendly owners who left us feeling well catered for and redirected us cheerfully when we arrived at their personal property rather than the site! We had the whole field to ourselves and the children were really excited to see the fire pit and wood that had been left out for us. Basic facilities, but everything we needed.

Shuffle off to the National Trust-run Shugborough Estate (10 minutes' drive), a colonnaded stately home on the edge of Cannock Chase. The gardens here have fab 18th-century features to stroll in, while the kids will find plenty of curiosities if they check out the well-preserved servants' quarters. More local history is up for perusing at nearby Stafford Castle (20 minutes). Got a head for heights? There are three high-altitude options hereabouts, the first two of which are rather countrified affairs – sailing through the sky on a hot air balloon tour (15 minutes) or climbing up to the top of the forest canopy at Go Ape Cannock (20 minutes). You might want to keep the third option on the list, Alton Towers (30 minutes), up your sleeve as a way of encouraging the young ones to stay as good as gold… Haven't got a horse but still like the look of life in the saddle? Find yourself a mount at Cannock Chase Trekking Centre (15 minutes).
