Commandeer one of the cosy cabins at Domaine du Fan for a weekend – or better yet, a few weeks – away at this leafy woodland site. As well as staying in the middle of 168 hectares’ worth of centenary trees and fields, you’ll have a small castle to check out in the park’s grounds too… This peaceful place, a five-minute drive from Verneuil-Moustiers, is a stellar spot for hiking and biking hols: there are waterside trails down by the river to trot along and scenic cycling paths to set off on in the rural surrounds. Up for another type of activity? Bash a few balls about on the site’s tennis court or venture out into the Brenne Natural Regional Park (20 minutes’ drive) in search of the many lakes and ponds for wild swims – there are a whopping 2,000 to choose from. When you’ve dried off, make a beeline for the balcony of your chalet back on base – each accommodation unit at Domaine du Fan has a private outdoor space. Indoors, there’s a ceiling fan, good lighting and mosquito nets, plus an electric heater for the nippier months.

The Limousin area is brimming with ace things to do – visit cities like Montmorillon (25 minutes’ drive) and Limoges (an hour) for cultural activities like theatre shows, and don’t overlook the excellent shopping either. In the latter city – the capital of the region – peer at the porcelain displays in the Adrien Dubouché museum, catch a performance at the Cultural Center Jean Gagnant and admire the 20,000 plants in the Parc de la Belle. This being France, visits to châteaux should also be on the agenda, so bound over to Bourg-Archambault (15 minutes) for a looksee at this handsome turreted building. The lakes at Mondon (15 minutes) and Chaillac (20 minutes) are equally as easy to reach – escape to these scenic spots for beach days with the kids. If it’s animal parks you’re after, flock to see the bird shows at The Giants of the Sky - Flight Scene (50 minutes), fawn over the four-legged creatures at Park Zoo Reynou (an hour and five minutes) or wave to the primates at Valley of the Monkeys (an hour and 20 minutes). If you’d rather rub shoulders with reptiles (perhaps not literally), peruse La Planète des Crocodiles (45 minutes).
