A lovely quiet site

  • Liked: The fabulous views, the smooth well-kept pitches, the clean facilities and the on-site cafe.

This is a lovely site with gently sloping pitches spread over several fields. The toilet block is in one corner of the site, so you may need to choose your pitch wisely depending on how near you want to be.

The facilities are kept beautifully clean, although they're a wee bit old. There's plenty of capacity, though, even if the site is full.

We were told that there was no need to book except at Bank Holiday weekends, and sure enough we got a nice pitch by turning up at 5pm on a Friday in August. At £24 for 2 people and a large tent for 2 nights in high season, we thought it was very good value.

The venue is ideal for walking or cycling in the Peaks. Apart from Cooper's Cafe, there are two rambler-friendly pubs nearby, and another cafe near the station.

There's a little bit of noise from the nearby railway line, but other than that it's the perfect spot for quiet enjoyment of the countryside.
  • Disliked: The restricted opening hours of the shop

Bad

(Family with young children, 1 review)

  • Date stayed: Jun 2010

  • Liked: Nothing.
  • Disliked: The grass was awfully wet, and we had great difficulty removing the rocks from under the tent. We'd erected the tent assuming the ground would be clear, with it being a 'campsite', but as we sat down in the tent, it was the roughest ground I've camped on in Europe.

The management was not at all helpful and grumpy. There was also a group of school kids, who were shouting till the early hours, but no sign of management.

Toilets were overflowing with excrement, and there were used sanitary items in the corner.

My daughter cut her face on a thorn branch, but no first aid at the reception. I'm sure that's against health and safety!

Overpriced, dreadfully managed & awful views!
