AVOID - NUFF SAID

(Family with young children, 1 review)

  • Liked: Nothing
  • Disliked: What can I say? Just got back from a weekend camping trip at Debden House. This is our third visit here and it shall be our last.
The fist night began with a barrage of pre pubescent girls screaming and cackling into the night. About 20 girls and boys in total. Eventually stopped making a racket at 2am, only to start again at 5am.

Thankfully they left the left day.

To our right was a couple on a romantic romp in the countryside. It transpired that they were in fact hardened alcoholics in the process of swallowing as many uppers and disco biscuits as they could get their hands on. At 6.30 am they decided to get into their tent and continue with a tirade of abuse at each other with culminated in a little bit of domestic violence.

A perfect setting to take our 2 years old son camping

Oh...did I mention a friend of mine being accused of driving a car around the camp site at high speed and told to drop whatever he had is his hand because it looked like an offensive weapon? It was a toothbrush...and he can't drive.

Horrendous

(Family with young children, 1 review)

  • Liked: The campfire, the forest location.
  • Disliked: The pitch was dirty when we arrived, rubbish everywhere and glass around the campfire spot - not great when you have kids running around.

    Dirty toilets and shower facilities.

No less than 2 different groups of campers playing loud music until 4am. And no one came round to tell them to turn it off. We had 3 young children with us who could not sleep through the racket. We all gave up and got up at 5.30am the next day to get the hell out of there and go home.

We were all hugely dissapointed and would never, NEVER, go back to this hell hole.

Always love it

(Young couple, 1 review)

  • Liked: Loved loads of things!!
1- Variety of different pitches, e.g.:

FIELD 1 Large families, caravans, not allowed fires.

FIELD 2 Families + dog, allowed to light fire, still lots going on, other kids for children to play with, great for couples, but still relaxing (personally my FAV field).

FIELD 6 - Large groups of teenagers, loud music (until 10-11 because it gets stopped) Allowed fires.

FIELD 3 4 5 - Similar to field 2 but alot more open, not as private and out the way like field 2.

As far as i know only FIELD 2 allow dogs.

    2. Showers always clean and warm, Queue can get bad so make sure you shower very very early, or little later in afternoon. Toilet, always clean, just take own toilet roll.

    3. The little cafe onsite, good prices, e.g. can of coke 55p?? And 2 min drive away shops, e.g. petrol station 24hr, Co-op, offie etc...

Overall that's it, Always enjoy when it when we go, rarely have to leave the site. All I will say is try to make sure you get on FIELD 2... We stayed for a week and it cost £50 each... Quite a good price as opposed to some of the other places I looked at.
  • Disliked: Hmm, hard to say really, other than, when driving up to field 2, there is quite a steep hill, and if driving and it has rained, have fun getting up there, and down. But not a major problem, just need to know how to drive haha!!

(Un)happykampers

(Young couple, 1 review)

  • Liked: Epping Forest.
  • Disliked: We were initially excited by the prospect of this lovely sounding campsite, and upon calling to make a booking, our expectations for a weekend away were sky high after chatting to the lovely lady on the end of the phone who told us that it wasn't necessary to book, but just turn up the following day.

Imagine our surprise when on arrival, we had a rude and indifferent welcome, pointing out that we didn't book 'properly' and should have sent a cheque for a reservation
(does anybody still deal in cheques these days?).

Biting our collective tongue we got back into our camper, drove up to the gate only to sit for 10 minutes at the head of a queue, because we hadn't been recognised and the gate opened to let us in. (Despite the fact we had checked in and hopped into the camper not two minutes earlier).

Unfortunately our opinion of this site diminished further and further the longer we stayed.

The toilet blocks were filthy (not sure about the main one, we didn't use it) with overflowing sanitary bins stacked outside the blocks.

The many rubbish bins around the site were overflowing and judging by the stench that was wafting from them hadn't been emptied in quite a while.

One redeeming feature of this site is your ability to wander off into the delightful Epping Forest and leave it behind.

So after a long afternoon's walk, and in a refreshed state of mind we returned to the campsite. As it was getting on for dusk we were expecting to encounter some of the famed Epping Forest nightlife.. What we weren't expecting was rats...big rats, small rats...rats everywhere, scrounging through the rubbish around the campsite and the black refuse sacks piled up beside the bins.

With that, and the increasing volume of the campers around us.. we were finally pulled the pin and set off for home.

Despite losing the *expensive* night's payment, This was the best decision we made when it came to this campsite.

Please don't misunderstand us: we are a young couple, not inclined to moan or complain about campsites, their level of cleanliness or the volume of our camping neighbours. We camp at least one weekend a month and have visited all kinds of campgrounds all over the UK, taking each site on its own merits and forming our own opinions, but this experience has left us cold.

This could be (and may have been) a magnificent campsite.. But as it is today needs a lot of work, more than a lick of paint and some major investment. And regular garbage collections. Please.

I would avoid Debden House campsite like the plague.

OK campsite but poor management

(With friends, 1 review)

  • Liked: Fire pits
  • Disliked: My bag was stolen from inside tent when we were sitting about 8m away and a child was sleeping inside. When we reported it to security and reception they said that it had happened a lot. WHY NO SIGN IN RECEPTION WARNING US?
Also lots of nails in bits of wood on site - 3 of us went home with punctures. Not a cheap weekend at all.
