Lismore divine, eco camp needs attention immediately...

  • Liked: Isle of Lismore. Walks, people, quiet, no street lamps or roaring cars.
When you stop talking you can listen to nature. I found myself doing that a lot, ferry was a delight. Buy the book of 10 trips for £10, £5 for kids. Port appin has a wee shop and a few expensive places to eat, ie £38 for surf n turf, but very very good food.
The view from every direction, Ben Nevis to name one.
  • Disliked: Eco camp is Located in the north of the island it's a good 90 minute walk to the local shop, that's 3 hr round trip (we walk at a good pace so beware).

The eco camp is the most basic you will find, we talked to some poor folk who had been there 4 days before getting more firewood, the eco toilet is a swing bin with a bag inside( not eco friendly to me) with a steep walk, not up real steps or a wooden staircase but slate plonked on the ground, not even set into the earth, and slate gets slippery when wet...

We stayed in the crofters cottage, now don't get me wrong expectations were not glossy like the pictures, but I personally was very disappointed initially. Most of us if we get the wow factor when we arrive then we will overlook small niggles...

now i realise rustic & eco can mean, sparse & basic, and I have been all over the world in various accommodation but I will start from the gate, which was a full size farm gate, that was fitted wrong and needs putting right, not good for kids or ladies to open. There is a gap under the front door I could slip my hand under, there were two huge holes in the wall where pipe work and electrical cables were showing, there was damp & unpainted walls, the staircase to the upper sleeping area has no handrail it is a potential bone breaking fall for kids, 8 ft up with steep stairs. I found myself telling two 12 year olds to be careful & come down them backwards.

There were 3 manky rugs covering the tiled floor that we rolled up and threw in the shed, my wife then had to sweep the floor where the mats had been as the electric Hoover was not working.

The light switch for the bathroom my kids could get 3 fingers in a hole and touch the cables, then when you get in the bathroom there are two seperate mains 3 core grey wires popping out of the walls with black insulation tape on them & you have never ever seen tiling like this before, it does not meet the ceiling & when the grouting has been done its been left to dry(i laughed out loud at that one)The shower tray misses the wall by a good two inches, so has been silicone sealed, which is now black with damp. The other walls have been touched up with white paint, I guess they had run out of the original magnolia.

There was a fire/smoke detector on the wall but just the back, I later found the front in the shed, when I was propping a length of purpose cut timber from shed wall to washing machine power button to keep it on...I kid you not...

We had no hot water for 4 days as the previous party had bled dry the backup tank, which had then been filled for our arrival from a very dubious source we were told..

We had been double booked so we got 9 nights for £200...we stayed 8.
If I could have found elsewhere or could afford to move we would have done.

If you're thinking of paying £55 a night or £250 a week, please don't do it here, look elsewhere, I will be contacting Christina & Steve for a refund, health & safety would have a field day here, and they may just do that yet. The local council may like a look too.

Did we enjoy lismore & all it has to offer?
    100% yes...it was magical.

    Did we enjoy eco camp?
Well read the above, then you make up your mind.
From the manager...

Dear Mr and Mrs Ballantyne,

Upon getting to our cottage, we found you had left on the Thursday. I am really not surprised given the state the house was in. The kitchen floor was flooded, due to we think a meddling with what was a small leek from the toilet pipe which we had provided sufficient capture for. The upstairs room was full of rubbish, with an all but empty vodka bottle on the shelf, there was sick on one pillow, and the bed had been urinated in. I am still hunting for the heart cushion, and two large white bath towels. The hearth and a sheepskin rug had been urinated on, presumably by a dog.

You really did have rather allot to say for two folk who said everything was great on a daily basis, so I will address each of your points in turn.

The rugs you told us you moved to stop your puppy peeing on them.

The water problem was unavoidable, many properties were running dry in the hot weather spell, we apologized for and discussed with you, and you were perfectly understanding at the time, as there was of course sufficient drinking water, but not enough for a shower. I agree this must have been frustrating for the few days until it was resolved, but communication of you true feelings would have been very helpful for us as the owners so we could endeavour to find a solution.

We do not provide fire wood at our camp, but allow campers to harvest their own from the woods in the field, its all part of the experience.

The cables awaiting to be connected to the towel rail in the bathroom are obviously disconnected from the consumer unit and completely safe, again any fears could have been discussed with a little communication.

You paid £200 for 9 nights, couldn't have camped for £23 per night, so I think your comments about the accommodation and value for money are unfounded, we certainly need a little work that is undoubted, but I don't feel I miss advertise our cottage.

Your customer service comment I again dispute, were checked on you everyday, and offered to collect your shopping from the shop as we do everyone, not to mention the Kayak trip my husband took your children out on, and the Spectre tent we gave to you so your children had something to play with all week (a tent we then lost the booking price of £10 per night for). We also gave you a welcome pack for your dogs, including a cosy bed, poo bags, a long lead and tether, and chew treats.

I hate to fight tit for tat, I am not sure I want to take health and safety advice from two people who left the island for a whole day to go to Oban leaving their two children behind dog sitting, in an area unfamiliar to them, in accommodation by the sea, not knowing anyone, and to top it off - texted me to please tell the children where the kayaks were?! The staircase could not have been so deathly dangerous if you left your children their alone surely?

Had you read the ' Know the code before you go' leaflet, you would know if is an offence to not clean up after your dogs, we picked several piles of poo up from around the property, not to mention the pee in the house.

I am really not sure how your found out cottage, or why you feel you need to comment on our campsite - which you were not even staying at, everyone else who has been to stay here has loved it, I suppose its perfect for our kind of people. I think we make in pretty clear what basic facilities we offer, and warn folk like you to stay well clear, its really not your scene.

I am very sorry you have not enjoyed you stay, had you at any point been truthful about how you felt, and not said how fine everything was each time we asked (daily at least) we might not be in this situation now.

We moved to Scotland to get away from aggressive shallow attitudes, and your right, Lismore is magical, it's the people that make it, that why we live here.

One thing you learn when living in a community is communication is the key to having successful relationships, and getting what you want out of life.

Have a safe journey home, unfortunately a refund is definitely not order, given the cost of deep cleaning and repair work we will need to do, believe me we have not profited financially from your stay.

Regards
Christina & Steve

Fantastic people, place and pod.

  • Liked: Everything. It was even better than we had anticipated. I stayed with my sister and we had originally booked for 3 nights. However, it was so good we were fortunately able to stay a 4th night, giving us more time to explore the lovely island of Lismore. We've still got more to do and had such a great time we will definitely be back. The pod was well arranged and felt spacious. Great views from the eco-toilet tucked away in the treehouse-cum-grotto were an added bonus. Every day was warm and sunny so we didn't need the heater, insulation, porch, hot water bottles or DVD player but these would be ideal for the inevitable return of cold, wind and rain. The owners were friendly and helpful and provided everything needed for a comfortable stay. We were able to borrow bikes which were the ideal way to get around on the island. Kayaks were available too along with various outdoor games. Free range cows and sheep grazed on the shore and we were visited by a free range hen. We loved the peace and tranquillity, stunning views and wide range of wild flowers. There is a heritage centre with cafe, shop/post office, church and numerous historic sites on the island as well as two different ferries for travelling further afield.

  • Liked: Very cosy and warm lodge, easy booking and hassle free stay. We were picked up and dropped off at the ferry, everything was ready for us and we were left to enjoy a great time enjoying the camp and exploring the island. The owners could not have been more helpful.
Lismore is a beautiful place, and very accessible in terms of many of the islands. Short and inexpensive ferry ride and some lovely places to explore.

  • Liked: Location and the view to the mainland.
  • Disliked: The midges on an evening, but that's Scotland for you! Fire does disperse them, but it may be a good idea to look into some repellent for the kiddies.

Fantastic camping experience at eco-camp.

  • Liked: Me and my father are regular campers of the Scottish western isles. Our travels have seen us camp in some of the most beautiful and scenic parts of Scotland. Our experience at eco-camp on the Isle of Lismore was without doubt, one of the best we have ever had - even though we were only there for 1 night. On our arrival we were immediately warmly greeted and made to feel at home. The owners could not have been any nicer to us, offering us tents to use and even fire wood if we wished to have a fire. We pitched up and got settled down. What is most striking from the site is the scenery, which was truly stunning: a full view over the sea, into magnificent Scottish mountain landscape. Later that night we were then invited into the household of the lovely site owners, who offered us food and drink, despite us arriving fully prepared for ourselves! We even managed to watch a film that night which is not your usual camping activity, but great fun nevertheless! The facilities were very good with a toilet and shower available. There was also the option for outdoor activities such as sea kayaking, however we didn't have enough time to do so. So overall, a fantastic place to camp with something for everyone and would thoroughly recommend to other campers.
  • Disliked: The fact we couldn't stay longer! ;)

  • Liked: We loved the location- on a very friendly and beautiful little island only 10 mins boat trip from Port Appin, and the scenery- with views of the sea, Ben Nevis and wildflowers and butterflies all around, was truly beautiful. Christina and Steve could not of been more helpful. We have stayed at many sites and this is the only one where we felt like a welcomed guest and that they would provide anything they could to ensure you enjoy your stay. Food prepared by Christina was lovely and she happily provided us with some vital items we had forgotten!

We stayed in a pre pitched tent which was all ready and marked for our arrival, table and chairs well worth the £5 extra as was the fire pack. I have to admit I was slightly worried about the compost toilets but they were lovely, no smell at all.

Fabulous weather was a bonus! The site represents fantastic value for money. Highly Recommended- we will be back (with the kids next time) and look forward to seeing Midge the kitten again too!

  • Disliked: Nothing, even the midgies were barely noticable (the fire helps with this)
