Why visit Ullapool?

Loch Broom

Sitting at the entrance to the coastal shores of Loch Broom, Ullapool is in an excellent location to make the most of one of the prettiest bodies of water in Wester Ross. Whether your holiday plans involve finding a deserted beach along the coast, trying out watersports with spectacular views or sampling freshly landed seafood, Ullapool – and Loch Broom in general – make great places to base yourselves.

The North Coast 500

As Ullapool is located right on the spectacular North Coast 500 route, the village is a major destination for campervanners, motorcyclists, bikepackers and road trippers of all kinds. It’s the largest village along the route, and there’s plenty of food, drink and entertainment around, including live music gigs (often of the traditional variety) at the various venues.

Gateway to the Outer Hebrides

Many people also pass through Ullapool on their way to Stornoway on the Isle of Lewis. Despite being relatively small in size, with only 1,500 or so permanent residents, Ullapool’s ferry provides a vital year-round link to the island, which can be reached in less than three hours. Finding a campsite near Ullapool is a great way to kick off your island-hopping adventure without missing all hidden gems on the mainland that many travellers pass by as they head to the ferry.

Nature in and around Ullapool

Camping near Ullapool is also a great way to explore one of the wildest parts of Scotland. Around 10 miles to the north of the village, spots like Knockan Crag are home to some truly spectacular geological formations, while a little further up the road Inverpolly Nature Reserve has golden eagles, deer, pine martens and lots of birdlife. Waterfalls are nearby too – like the Falls of Measach, where you can watch water cascading over a 45-metre drop into a wooded gorge. And that’s without forgetting Loch Broom itself, a biodiversity hotspot where you’ll often see oceangoing birds like cormorants basking on the rocks.

Ullapool’s best attractions

  • Ullapool’s seafront has a small beach, but we’d also recommend driving 10 minutes north to Ardmair, where a large sweeping pebbly bay is an excellent spot for a seaside stroll. Achmelvich beach (about an hour) is also within reach if you’re in the mood for white sands and turquoise waters.

  • Take a cruise around the nearby Summer Isles from Ullapool harbour, spotting gannets, puffins, seals and dolphins along the way. This is a great alternative to a full-blown island-hopping trip around the Hebrides if you’re pushed for time, allowing you to experience all the exhilaration of the Scottish west coast in just a couple of hours

  • Get physical with sporty activities like a game at Ullapool Golf Course, mountain biking (bring your own or hire one in the village) or sea kayaking (summer months only). There’s also a well-maintained public pool and leisure centre in the village itself.

  • Ullapool also has a tourist information centre where you can chat with knowledgeable locals about the best walks, bike rides and activities on offer during your visit.

Watch sunsets at Rhue Lighthouse

Stroll along the shores of Loch Broom to Rhue Lighthouse and gaze out over mighty mountains like Ben More Coigach and Beinn Ghobhlach. Standing on the shore here is particularly spectacular at sunset as you watch the last of the day disappearing behind the far-off hills as the light dances on the waters of the loch…

Visit a community-owned island

Drive down to Ardmair at weekends in the high season to board a ferry to Isle Martin, an uninhabited community-owned island that sits across from Ullapool in Loch Broom. This is about as close as you can get to total isolation while still being within sight of the Scottish mainland and is great for walkers who want to get away from the crowds. The place also has a real community spirit, and local volunteers regularly sail over this way to clear bracken, maintain the island’s old buildings and  host special events like seaweed festivals. Isle Martin also has a popular café that serves tasty homemade cake.

Cold War connections

During one of the frostiest parts of the Cold War in the 1980s, a sizeable chunk of the Soviet Union’s fishing fleet could be found just off the west coast of Scotland. This wasn’t an attempt at Russian infiltration – these mackerel processing ships were tolerated and even welcomed by the locals, who often established friendly relations with the foreign seamen that stretched beyond the Iron Curtain. You can find out more about Ullapool’s fishing history in the village’s museum (open during the high season).
