As a caveat- I am pretty antisocial, I go away alone for some peace and quiet and usually camp on small farm type sites where it’s generally quieter.
I hate ‘big sites’ and I don’t do kids… I’m sure there are some lovely small people out there, but generally I try to avoid them! I have never before booked a site near a beach during ‘the 6 weeks’… but I needed to get away, needed to be near the sea and this site had great reviews so…
On arrival my heart sank… it looked so busy, rows of tents and campers and caravans… and yes, kids… but it had been a long drive to get there and I’d booked so I decided that worst case scenario I’d just stay the first night of the three I’d booked.
I was greeted warmly by the wardens and given great advice on how to find a flat-ish spot- take levellers if you’re in a van, you will probably need them- paid my balance and drove up the site to try to find a ‘quiet, flat’ spot… it WAS busy- understandably so- but I found a pitch I liked the look of and parked and levelled up.
Then I stood and listened… and despite how busy it was and the amount of happy campers around, all I could hear was the sound of the waves from the beach below.
So I set up my awning, with some trepidation as I genuinely thought I’d be taking it down and going home the next day!
The reality was that I stayed for the three nights I’d booked and loved every minute- if I hadn’t had to be at work the next day, I’d have begged on my knees to stay longer!
The site was pretty quiet most of the time, and ‘Quiet nights’ were totally respected by all, I don’t think I’ve ever slept so well on a site!
The toilets and showers really were as immaculate as all the reviews say, the wash up area was great, though the water pressure was low at busy times- not a problem for me but if washing up for a family, try to do it when it’s quieter!
The beach being less than a 5 min walk was wonderful, hearing the sea from the site was so restful.
The pub at the bottom of the site was great for pints/wine and food… but I’d give the cocktails a miss in future- in my opinion excessively expensive and very weak!
Walking from the site to Bude either via the coast path or over the hill to the canal path was fabulous- I did both- and the bus back stopped pretty much at the site gate, which was very welcome once I’d developed a blister!!
I loved the fact that they charge per person not per pitch- I get it that for a family it can get expensive, but for me it made a ‘cheap’ break and I do resent paying the same as a family of four as is expected on some other sites.
In short- it’s fabulous- I will be going back!
