Peace, the Preseli Hills and a newly finished outdoor pool where you can watch the tiddlers splish while you bask in the sun on the courtyard terrace…yep, we think we could handle some of that on our hols. If you’re of similar bent, pitch up at family-friendly Trefach Caravan Park and Country Club minutes from the hills in the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park.

Trefach is a peaceful and secluded site in a remote location with scenic walks around the local countryside, but it’s within driving distance of loads of things to do too, like visiting the fishing villages and coastal towns of Tenby, Haverfordwest, Dinas Cross and Fishguard, tracking down some of the best views in Wales, or hitting Blue Flag beaches for watersports and lounging.

On site, there’s a launderette with commercial washer and dryer, a play area and arcade to keep the kids entertained alongside the heated pool, and a newly refurbished clubhouse serving up seasonal entertainment and meals.

Lokale bezienswaardigheden

As well as Tenby, Fishguard et al, there are several other towns within driving distance of Trefach Caravan Park and Country Club for festivals, farmers’ markets, activities and shopping. Pembrokeshire’s arts and crafts capital Narberth is about fifteen minutes’ drive from Trefach for antique shops and art galleries; the ruins of the Norman Narberth Castle lie just above the town. Further afield, but well worth a day trip, there’s Newport, Wales’s third biggest city, and Cardigan for the National Wool Museum, New Quay Honey Farm and taking a boat out to dolphin-spot in Cardigan Bay.

Pack a picnic for a day or two in the Preseli Hills for climbing, walking, horse-riding and views to Ireland’s Wicklow Mountains to the west and the Brecon Beacons to the east. There are archaeological highlights among the hills too, including stone circles, Iron Age forts and Neolithic burial chambers, and the same bluestones that make up part of the inner circle of Stonehenge (academic arguments still rage about whether the stones were brought 180 miles to Stonehenge from here).

There’s more walking in the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park on the doorstep of Trefach; the Pembrokeshire Coast National Trail from St Dogmaels to Amroth goes through the national park and the park authorities have put together guides on walks for all levels of fitness as well as guided walks. Too energetic? There are over a dozen Blue Flag beaches in Pembrokeshire including Saundersfoot, Newport and Poppit Sands.

For little poppets, Oakwood Theme Park is at nearby Narberth and has adrenaline and family rides as well as less hair-raising activities like go-karting and panning to find gold in them thar hills. Also within around ten miles there’s the adventure park and zoo Folly Farm at Kilgetty, voted Best Family Day Out in Wales and with Europe's biggest undercover vintage funfair.

Elsewhere around Pembrokeshire and in the national park, there are gardens, vineyards, adventure farms, castles and more to explore, with plenty of options for wet days too: try indoor racing at Pembrokeshire Raceway, slithering among the reptiles at Dragon Reptiles or jumping around the giant adventure playground at Bluestone National Park Resort.

Feeling sweet? Take a tour and have a go at making your own concoction at Pemberton’s Chocolate Farm, nearby in Llanboidy; disappointingly, the ‘chocolate cinema’ here does not mean a cinema made of chocolate, but there’s a well-stocked chocolate shop to make up.
