Aviemore Lodge Breaks

Whether you’re travelling with family and looking forward to lots of summer fun, intent on scaling all those Cairngorms munros or simply looking for peace and quiet tucked away up a glen, Aviemore has a lodge, cabin or pod that will suit you.

Around Aviemore, you can try anything from sailing on lochs to wildlife spotting – or how about a snowy winter sports break? Take your pick from secluded bothies in the Cairngorms National Park, pods with lochside views or family-centric lodges with luxury facilities. Read on for tips on how to find the right Aviemore accommodation for you.

Where you should stay in Aviemore

  • Aviemore is rightly famous for outdoor activities including hiking, mountain biking and climbing in Speyside hillsides, and it’s just as well known that the local weather can be rather unpredictable. If you’re spending the day out in the open, staying in a well-equipped lodge with a hot shower and heating means you can warm up and stay comfy no matter what is going on outside.

  • Whether you’re swimming in the lochs or hiking the glens, you’ll probably be wanting the family dogs to join in all your outdoorsy Highlands adventures. A quick search for dog-friendly lodges around Aviemore will show you all the places to stay between those outings. The Highlands in general are great for travelling dogs, in fact – especially if you pick out places like the walks around Glencoe or the beaches of Arisaig.

  • Aviemore makes a clever base for family holidays too, with plenty of things to do to keep the kids entertained, including rope courses, climbing walls and quad biking. To minimise travel time, choose lodges that place you close to attractions like the Cairngorm Reindeer Centre or the Strathspey Steam Railway.

  • Want to be alone, or looking for a cosy couples’ rural stay? Seek out lodges a little further out of town for direct access to the hills or forests of Cairngorms National Park – or choose accommodation close to Aviemore centre for plenty of choice when it comes to romantic date nights in restaurants and bars. Alternatively, make Aviemore a day trip and base yourselves closer to Inverness for more eating and drinking options.

  • While Aviemore is an all-year around outdoors destination, in winter it’s all about the snow. Choose a lodge with heating and insulation and you’ll have somewhere cosy to come home to after a day zooming down the slopes. Not a skier? No problem – take walks in the clear, crisp air and then hunker down in a cosy slopeside pub.

What you can do near Aviemore

  • There’s definitely something in the water around Aviemore, and you can find out what that is with guided tours and tastings at distilleries on the Malt Whisky Trail – just be sure to designate a driver for the day (ideally not yourself…). Famous names like Dalwhinnie and Cardhu also have shops where you can buy their finest single malts.

  • Head for the glorious expanse of dune-backed sand at Nairn for a summer-time swim, or take a dip in Loch Ness (perhaps with Nessie) at Dores beach. Surrounded by Cairngorm mountain landscapes, Loch Morlich is the spot for watersports like sailing, paddleboarding and kayaking.

  • Learn about local wildlife at Loch Garten Osprey Centre and have a stroll in ancient pine forests, or take a guided wildlife safari of Speyside, with the chance to spot elusive pine martens, red squirrels and golden eagles. Over at Chanonry Point, you may get lucky and spot dolphins playing in the waves.

  • Visit the historic sites. From Aviemore, you have a choice of stately baronial castles like Cawdor, Glamis or seaside Dunnottar to tour. Explore the historic battlefield at Culloden, where the Jacobites were defeated in 1745, or check out the ruined medieval cathedral at Elgin.
