Loch Lomond lodge holidays

Magnificent mountains, lush woodlands and the biggest body of water in Scotland – Loch Lomond is a hotspot for lodge holidays for very good reasons like these. Family-friendly breaks, adults-only retreats and accommodation that allows dogs can all be found in the area – read on to find out why Loch Lomond is such a good destination (as if you needed convincing…), how to book and what you could get up to based in a pod, lodge, cabin or hut.

Where you should stay in Loch Lomond National Park

  • Loch Lomond is one of Scotland’s great family destinations. These lodge sites have shown themselves as family-friendly, and many of them come with additional facilities like play areas or a baby changing facility to make everything run smoothly for busy parents. Pick somewhere close to Balloch on the southern edge of the loch and you’ll be within easy reach of activities for all ages – with boat trips, an aquarium and a country park, there’ll be something to do come rain or shine.

  • Loch Lomond is also prized for its many pet-friendly walks, pubs and restaurants, and the area as a whole is well set up to welcome dog owners. Finding a pet-friendly Loch Lomond lodge is rarely a struggle in this part of the world – opt for a cabin, pod or hut on the eastern side of the loch for easy access to Queen Elizabeth Forest Park and its waymarked walking trails. Dog-friendly days out on the water are also possible – they’re welcome aboard the SS Sir Walter Scott steamship on Loch Katrine and can join you on the ferry to Inchmahome Island on Lake of Menteith.

  • As the area is so popular with families, you might want to use our filters to find adults-only Loch Lomond lodges if you’re dreaming of a holiday that’s all about relaxing with your other half. The national park is very large, and there’s almost always somewhere quiet just round the corner, even during the school holidays. The area immediately around Loch Lomond (especially on the A82) does tend to get busy though, so for a quieter break book somewhere near one of the other 21 spectacular lochs in the national park.

  • For more leisure options, take a look at lodges and cabins with on-site fishing. In addition to parks with fishing lakes, anglers can explore both coastal and inland waterways, where catches like sea trout and salmon can be found. Loch Fyne, an area renowned for its quality fishing, is just to the north of the national park on the A83, with plenty of places to stay around Inveraray

What to do in Loch Lomond National Park

  • Cycling along Loch Lomond’s banks could hardly be easier. Most of the western side of the loch is bordered by a paved segregated bike lane (head to Luss to hire conventional or electric two-wheelers if you haven’t brought your own). Lodges elsewhere in the national park, like the gorgeous Cowal Peninsula, give you access to car-free mountain bike tracks along the banks of Loch Eck, and for more adventurous gravel biking you could head to Aberfoyle’s network of forest trails.

  • Walking and hiking opportunities also abound in the national park and surrounding area. Look for a lodge on the eastern side of the loch (or within reach of the foot passenger ferry that crosses between Tarbet and Rowardennan) to take on Ben Lomond, Scotland’s most southerly Munro and one of the best to start with if you’re new to mountain climbing. Accommodation can also be found close to the West Highland Way and John Muir Way, two top long-distance trails where you may appreciate some respite in the form of a cosy night snuggled up in a lodge.

  • Wend your way westwards to Argyll and find a lodge, cabin or pod near Benmore Botanic Gardens for a colourful day out exploring its vast collection of plants. While you’re in the area, make sure to pay a visit to Puck’s Glen, a dramatic wooded gorge with a spectacular waterfall trail.
