Lodge holidays in Scotland

Lodges and Scotland make quite a magical mix. Solo getaways, couples' retreats and cabins where you can bring the whole family together are all among the options – read on to find out more about where to go, what to do and how to book a holiday that suits your individual requirements.

Where you should stay in Scotland

  • For forest lodges where you can wake up to the sound of birdsong, take a look around the Lowlands where there are generally more woodlands to be found, or check out thickly forested areas like the Trossachs (easily accessible, pretty and close to Edinburgh and Glasgow) or the Cairngorms (further north but home to rare Caledonian pine forests). Bring a pair of binoculars, as a lodge among the trees may mean close-up encounters with red squirrels, pine martens and woodpeckers.

  • Alternatively, check out our range of coastal lodges to be near sea views and the sound of the waves. We’ve got lodges on both Scotland’s east and west coasts – head to the former for calm landscapes, pretty fishing towns and a better chance of cloud-free skies, or wend your way along the west coast if you’re after dramatic landscapes, island hopping and spectacular fjord-like sea lochs. Booking a lodge with its own toilet and shower will help you effortlessly freshen up after all that salt and sand.

  • Book a dog-friendly Scottish lodge to make sure that your four-legged friends don’t feel left out – they’ll definitely appreciate the chance to run around in the countryside and splash about in the sea by your side (as long as you choose a dog-friendly beach like Nairn or those around Ayr). An added bonus is that they’ll feel safe and sound within the wooden walls of your accommodation with you in the next room.

  • For something on the fancier end of the spectrum, find a Scottish lodge with a hot tub for the ultimate in relaxation. Scotland’s outdoors is gorgeous, but it’s all the easier to appreciate when you’re looking out at it from a hot tub on those chillier evenings. Alternatively, you could find a lodge near an off-site luxury spa – Perthshire has a number of great options to choose from.

  • Travelling with kids? Finding somewhere with a play area will give the little ones plenty to do when the sun is shining, and having a lodge with lots of indoor space means that arts and crafts can always be improvised on the kitchen table when it’s not. Location-wise, keep an eye on Aberfoyle, Peebles and Aberdeen, all of which have kid-friendly Go Ape courses and forest segway rides nearby.

  • On the other hand, if you want somewhere that’s particularly peaceful, you won’t necessarily need to have quite so many attractions close by. Park yourself somewhere remote and secluded like Scotland’s far north if you really want to escape – but don’t overlook how peaceful the Scottish Borders can be too (they’re almost as sparsely populated as the outermost extremities of the Highlands).

What you can do in Scotland

  • Explore Scotland’s hills, find a pub on the way down from the summit and then head back home to your lodge to rest your weary feet. Not all of Scotland’s most spectacular peaks are difficult to access or climb (although a good level of fitness is required). Spots like Ben Lomond, the mountains around Arrochar, Ben Venue or Meall a' Bhuachaille are all manageable, gorgeous and easy to navigate.
  • Bring your bike along and cycle through Scotland’s most spectacular scenery, whether you opt for the 100 car-free miles of the Kintyre Way or the 50-mile National Cycle Network Route 78, a flat trail passing castles, lochs and forests between Oban and Fort William – in either case, we’ve got lodges available at various points along the way.
  • Find the perfect balance between town and country by booking a lodge near one of Scotland’s best cities. We’ve got cosy cabins of all shapes and sizes within easy reach of cultural hubs like Edinburgh and Glasgow as well as thriving characterful cities further north like Inverness and Aberdeen. Take yourself off to some of Scotland’s best contemporary restaurants and experience shopping on Edinburgh Princes Street or in Glasgow’s West End before heading back to the peace and quiet of your wood-clad abode…
