Where you should stay in Patterdale

  • Bed down slightly north of Patterdale for better access to Ullswater, one of the national park’s loveliest lakes. This body of water is famous for its steamers – vintage vessels that have been cruising the area for more than 150 years.

  • If you’re holidaying with the kids, look out for family-friendly lodges with access to plenty of outdoor space. You can also take children out on easy trails like the Ullswater Bridleway on a two-hour stroll that will land you at Silver Bay – also known as the lake’s ‘Secret Beach’.

  • Left the little travellers at home? Or just want some couples’ time? Browse adults-only lodges in Patterdale where you can enjoy the fresh country air in peace.

  • If you’re planning to do lots of trekking, make sure your glamping accommodation has a hot shower. No doubt you’ll want to freshen up after tackling fells like High Street, Glenridding Dodd, Fairfield and St Sunday Crag, all of which are accessible on foot from Patterdale.

  • Heading to the Lakes out of season? Choose a cosy lodge with heating and insulation to curl up indoors with a page-turner in bad weather. You can also plan day trips to rainy-day attractions like the iconic Dalemain house. This Tudor manor has ornate drawing rooms featuring 18th-century panelling, as well as a Norman-era peel tower and a nursery displaying toys from throughout the ages.

What you can do in Patterdale

  • Make like William Wordsworth, who grew up in Patterdale and used to angle on Ullswater, by organising a fishing trip from your comfy lodge (the Environment Agency offers day licences). The lake has a sizable stock of wild brown trout, and the season runs from mid-March to the end of September.

  • Amateur historian? Head to Moor Divock, part of Askham Fell to the east of Ullswater, to seek out cairns and burial mounds like the Cockpit. This three-metre-wide series of standing stones is thought to date all the way back to the Bronze Age.

  • Just 10 minutes’ drive from your lodge in Patterdale is Aira Force, a waterfall that’s even more impressive after it rains. You’ll wend your way along woodland trails here to the main 65-foot drop just off the banks of Ullswater.

  • Traverse the Kirkstone Pass, the main road to the tourist village of Ambleside, and stop off to sip Cumbrian ales in England’s third-highest pub.
