Lodge holidays in Kielder

If you’re off to the Kielder area, chances are you’re in search of fresh air and lovely scenery – and what better way to make the most of all that than to stay in a lodge or a log cabin? These sorts of stays give you access to the open air as soon as you open the door – along with the chance to get nice and cosy again just by closing it.

There are tons of outdoor activities around here too, so whether you’re planning days of watersports, horse riding, mountain biking or simply exploring you’re bound to be pleased that you can come home to a hot shower and a comfy place to put your feet up at the end of it all. Read on to find out our top tips on picking a place that’s right for you.

Where you should stay around Kielder

  • Kielder Forest Park is the big draw for many visitors – and with good reason. England’s largest forest space is a nature lover’s paradise, and it’s home to the county’s only breeding osprey population as well as an important community of red squirrels. You’ll need to be fairly self-sufficient if you’re heading out to stay in a remote part of the park; those who think they’ll be happier near a shop or pub can opt for lodges near small villages like Bellingham or Otterburn without losing the rural vibe.

  • With so much wildlife around, any visiting dogs will need to be well behaved, but they’re still very welcome around much of Kielder. Just make sure to look out for a dog-friendly lodge, and have some plans for outings where your canine pal can have a bit more of a run around: Bamburgh beach, for example, is a good choice.

  • The huge range of activities around Kielder Water make it a fine place to base yourselves for a family holiday, and we have some great family-friendly lodges that will fit the bill for places to stay. If you’re here on a longer break, choose somewhere to the east of the lake for easy days out nearby: perhaps to do the Harry Potter tour at Alnwick Castle or see the city lights of Newcastle.

  • If you’re travelling without kids, there are plenty of cosier options to choose from too: maybe you’d like to splash out on a luxury lodge, or look out for an adults-only site for that extra layer of peace? Choose a secluded spot for full forest immersion, or head to somewhere like Hexham to mix up rural days out with restaurant dinners – either option is an excellent way to explore the area.

What you can do around Kielder

  • Head straight to Kielder Water if you’re in the market for a whole lot of activities: this is the place for fishing, paddleboarding, canoeing, archery, axe throwing… and of course lovely waterside walks too. There are several play areas close to the lake’s edge too, and the Kielder Water Bird of Prey Centre, on the southern side of the lake, is a popular spot to visit.

  • A trip to Kielder Forest has a lot to offer for all sorts of visitors: it’s got 100 miles of mountain bike trails for the daredevils, art-filled sculpture trails for quieter walks and a Gruffalo Trail that should keep the kids happy. Add in Kielder Castle, the Minotaur Maze, a mini golf course, a high ropes course and several spots for fishing or pond dipping and you’ve got yourselves plenty of variety for all ages.

  • It’s worth taking it a little bit easy on the activity front sometimes though – Kielder Forest Park is a gold-tier dark sky park, so it’s got some of the best stargazing in the whole country. Head out with your own telescope and night photography kit if you have it, or sign up for events (either adults’ or kids’ sessions) at the excellent Kielder Observatory. They’re rightly popular so you’ll probably need to book at least a couple of months ahead.
