Love Devon? Try Norfolk
Mad for the Peak District? Give the north east a go!
Try something new this August bank holiday, urges outdoor accommodation specialist Pitchup.com, and see more of the UK at its summer best. For those dedicated to Devon or partial to the Peak District it may seem perverse to suggest an alternative, but why not live a little and try somewhere new?
Pitchup.com founder Dan Yates said: “If you adore north Devon, you’ll love what you find in north Norfolk, and if you’re a Lake District lover why not head to western Scotland for a change? We offer over 5,000 sites so there’s no need to limit your camping, glamping or caravanning to places you’ve always been to: hit the road, get out and explore the country - you never know, you might discover a new favourite!”
Ideal for a spontaneous August bank holiday getaway are:
Swap north Devon for Norfolk
For those who love the languid ambience of north Devon with its sandy beaches and surfer-dude style, try north Norfolk which boasts sweeping golden sands and chic market towns such as Burnham Market and Holt.
Park Farm Camping in Dereham is a simple, affordable and no-frills site close to the many attractions of north Norfolk and Norwich. Situated around a working farm with plenty of wildlife to spot, this site offers plenty of space and a play area for mini guests.
The 10 x 10m non-electric grass pitches are suitable for all types of unit, sleep six people and include a pup tent, awning or gazebo, and there’s free Wi-Fi on site too. Costs £60 for a three-night stay. There’s also availability on the fully-equipped, one-bedroom holiday home which costs £180 for a three-night stay and sleeps two people.
Swap Cornwall for Loch Ness
People who love the dramatic scenery of Cornwall with its great walking trails, Celtic history and local legends, should head north to Loch Ness.
BCC Loch Ness Glamping is just a few miles from Loch Ness and the equally beautiful and enchanting Glen Affric, one of the most beautiful glens in Scotland. On site, children can go net fishing for little trout in the River Enrick, while just six miles away you’ll find Urquhart Castle, boat trips on Loch Ness - for Nessie spotting - and the Loch Ness Monster Exhibition Centre.
Hagrid’s House camping pod sleeps six, has Wi-Fi, a shared barbecue area and modern amenities, and costs from £114 for three nights. Hardstanding electric pitches are also available, costing from £42 for three nights.
Swap the Peak District for Northumberland
Those who visit the Peak District for its breathtaking landscapes and pretty villages will be equally enamoured with Northumberland, home to the vast Kielder Forest and the awe-inspiring Pennine Way.
Bluebell at Birdsong Garden in Alnwick is surrounded by country and coastal views, and offers total peace and privacy. Situated in a private garden, the Dandy Riva Glamping Van is full of character and boasts a comfy double bed and an open plan living area. The back-to-nature style site is an ideal base for exploration with Alnwick Castle, Craster, Holy Island and the Cheviots all within easy reach.
Dandy Riva Glamping Van sleeps two, has a chiminea, an outdoor cooking area, a tinkle tent portaloo, and costs from £120 for three nights.
Swap the Lake District for west Scotland
English fans of the Lake District could head further north to Scotland’s west coast, where the views around Ryan Bay are equally as breathtaking, offering a relaxing getaway. And Scots, why head south when there is so much so enjoy at home?
Ryan Bay Caravan Park is right on the shore with its own clubhouse, family bar and children’s outdoor play area. Nearby are the gardens of Castle Kennedy and Lochinch Castle, while Glasgow – still enjoying a post-Commonwealth Games glow – is 40 miles away and well worth a day trip. Prices from £354 for a three-night stay in a two-bed holiday home for six people.
Swap Devon’s moorlands for west Wales
Lovers of the glorious countryside, walking opportunities, cycle routes and wildlife of the moors of Devon will be right at home in west Wales. There are beautiful villages and spectacular countryside to explore with all types of activities from hiking in the hills to kayaking on the River Wye.
Walkers Cottage at Hay-on-Wye offers is set in beautiful countryside with breathtaking views over the Wye Valley. The environmentally-friendly site offers glamorous bell tents and fantastic eco-friendly amenities. The peaceful site makes a fantastic base for exploring the Wye Valley, and is just a short drive from the Brecon Beacons National Park with its rugged scenery and great walking opportunities.
The 5m bell tent sleeps four people and is equipped with four single camp beds, utensils, barbecue, some charcoal and logs, bedding and bed linen. Costs £240 for a three-night stay.
