Okay, I have thought about what to say here, I am usually never a person that leaves a negative review and I am aware that the manager has a habit of leaving aggressive and insulting replies to criticism. However, I can only describe this site as bizarre. We took a very last minute decision to leave our camper van at home and hire on site accommodation for the new year. We are seasoned campers and festival goers and so are our children, so we made the most of it, but other families would potentially have been appalled at the conditions of this campsite. The showering facilities do not work, and are permanently locked. The toilets do not work. There’s never toilet roll or hand washing equipment and they are filthy. The on site caravans are run down and dirty. The site is dangerous for small children. The Manager is unwelcoming and makes you feel like you are in the way. There is a system of having to check in, but you can’t get hold of anyone and then when you do you feel like you are bothering them. The manager spoke to his member of staff (perhaps a family member?) so poorly in front of me that I felt sad for him. On reflection, and after reading every other review carefully, I think a few things need to happen here. A). The manager needs to change the website and be open and honest about what he is offering. This is a stop off suitable for backpackers or couples. We have stayed at many sites where there is literally just a porta loo and been absolutely fine with it, but that has to be made absolutely clear. B). The check in system has to change. We have also stayed at many sites where the check in system is just a chalk board. (Keysafes for pods or yurts etc) This works fine and you are not left in awkward situations with staff members who are resentful of being disturbed. C). The caravans either need to go, or there needs to be a serious rethink. This is not a holiday accommodation fit for purpose. They are poorly maintained, dated and dirty. No one keeps on top of making sure you have gas or water and it is unclear how you are meant to manage this situation on your own.
Looking at the other reviews, I am fully expecting a reply essentially suggesting that if you camp, or tour, you are to expect dangerous and dirty facilities. I am going to get ahead of that and say, if you take on the responsibility of running a campsite, especially to the level you advertise this one to, you should be maintaining it. I would suggest closing down for the next few months and addressing the urgent maintenance work that needs doing, and reopening for the spring when things are being managed properly.
