A wild landscape of beech forests, waterfalls and mountains, Serre Regional Natural Park (direct from the site) is a splendid region to explore on foot or by bike; a favourite is the hike up to Cascata di Marmarico (50 minutes’ drive to the car park) to see the multiple drops of the waterfall. You can also join organised guided tours of historic villages like cobbled Mongiana (15 minutes), with its relics of former ironworks and charcoal kilns. If you’re into history, be sure to take in the Carthusian monastery of Certosa di Serra San Bruno in Serra San Bruno (10 minutes) – you can also walk there along the Camino di San Bruno pilgrimage route. The monastery itself is not open to the public, but you can visit the church, museum and walled water gardens. The site owners can also organise a host of seasonal activities in the local area for you, from grape harvesting, pressing, and processing workshops to jam-making and chestnut harvesting.
