Stay at The Apuldram Centre, five minutes’ drive from the centre of Chichester in the grounds of a West Sussex rural daycare centre, and you won’t just have a peaceful and spacious place to rest your head. You’ll also get the warm glow of doing good for the world, as all proceeds from pitch fees go towards supporting the independent charity that runs this vital facility for adults with learning disabilities. Like to add a few more coins to the coffers while settling in at this small and friendly spot? Head into the centre’s café, which serves breakfasts, lunches and a rather enticing spread of homemade cakes and bakes. Again, all profits go towards supporting the charity’s work (and you’ll get a few tasty treats into the bargain…). Barbecues are permitted if alfresco evening meals are on the cards, although site staff recommend taking the 20-minute walk to the waterside Crown & Anchor pub at least once during your hol as well (and they’ll happily recommend other local eats too). During the daytime, activities are plentiful around here: it's a 15-minute drive to the Goodwood Estate and West Wittering beach, and a 20-minute journey to Portsmouth. Walkers can hit the trails of the South Downs National Park, just north of Chichester, while cyclists might like to pedal along a path just next to the site. Facilities at the park include an indoor washing-up area, phone charging points within the amenity hut and dedicated bathroom facilities including toilets, a shower room and an accessible wetroom. Wifi is available at the café and the outdoor seating area just next to it.

Being so close to the city of Chichester (five minutes’ drive), you’ll want to schedule in some time on the itinerary for spots like the grand Norman cathedral and city walls, as well as the Pallant House art gallery with its excellent Modern British collection. Fishbourne Roman Palace is also five minutes away for a visit to the biggest Roman residence ever unearthed in Britain, while more recent history can be explored at the Tangmere Military Aviation Museum’s aerospace exhibits spanning from World War I to the Cold War (10 minutes). Leave thoughts of battles behind at the Goodwood Estate country house, with a centre for motor circuit and horse racing (15 minutes), or wander to the Weald & Downland Living Museum (15 minutes) and walk through 40 acres’ worth of gardens sprinkled with buildings dating from 950AD to the 19th century.
