General
- Family-friendly park on Unaweep-Tabegauche Scenic and Historic Byway
- One million acres of hunting and wildlife-spotting land within an hour
- Direct access to hiking, riding, ATV, UTV and jeep trails
In need of a getaway full of hiking, hunting, fishing and off-roading, plus stunning canyons that have been compared to that Grand one down in Arizona? Then high-tail it to High Country RV Park, a family-friendly campground in the small town of Naturita, Colorado.
Naturita’s on the spectacularly scenic Unaweep-Tabegauche Scenic and Historic Byway, a 133-mile route through valleys and canyons including the particularly stunning Unaweep Canyon, so getting out and exploring is an absolute must. The byway is fab all year ‘round, but July’s wildflowers and September’s changing of the aspens make for particularly gorgeous drives.
If you’d prefer to get out from behind the wheel for your wanderings, there are tons of other options starting from Naturita – hiking trails, biking, kayaking, rafting, riding trails and rock-climbing – so you can get a workout and a view at the same time. Plenty of ATV, UTV and jeep trails start nearby too, if you fancy an explore without as much effort required.
You’ll be feeling the hunger after all that, so head back to home base to fire up the barbecue (nab supplies at the grocery store in town) and settle in next to the campfire with your trusty canine companion by your side. You’ve got loads of room to spread out here, so let yourself relax in the peace and quiet among the trees while you watch the stars spin overhead.

Local attractions
Within an hour’s drive of High Country RV Park, you’ll make it to the Bureau of Land Management lands and Uncompahgre National Forest that together make up more than a million acres of hunting land. This is elk country, so be prepared to go after some big game… or, if you’re not the hunting type, set out on a birdwatching or wildlife-spotting jaunt instead.
There are other ways to spend your time outdoors too, particularly during winter stays. Telluride ski resort is easily reachable at an hour and 15 minutes from base, so you’ll be hitting the slopes, snowmobiling or ice climbing in no time – not to mention making the most of the après ski action at some of the local bars and restaurants.
If you need an urban break from the great wide open, make tracks for Grand Junction, a little over two hours away, to explore the downtown area, poke around loads of museums and galleries, have a couple (or three, or four) winery stops, and traipse around the Western Colorado Botanical Gardens.
Any film buffs out there? You won’t want to miss a stop at the Bedrock Store (on I-90 just off 141 out of Naturita) where scenes from Thelma and Louise were filmed.
