  • In the Sierra Madre Mountains just off Highway 395
  • 70 miles from Reno
  • Restaurant, lounge and well stocked general store
A Milford mountain location among the peaks of the Sierra Madre range, just off Highway 395 on its scenic run through California from Canada all the way to Mexico: what a sweet spot has Honey Lake Campground. (Taking a year or so off work and doing the whole Highway 395 route is very much recommended too.) The mountain setting here is in California's Lassen County, 70 miles from Reno and 17 from the shops, restaurants and bars of Susanville. It has pitches scenically set under the site's high Jeffrey pines, a short distance from the site's clean bathrooms with free hot showers. Also on site are a restaurant and lounge with tap beer and wine (both very much recommended after a hard day's hike), a laundry room, film rental and a well stocked general store with essential staples, groceries, hardware and a small selection of souvenirs. There are both north and south entrances for guests coming off the highway to stay here; just look out for the roadside signs. Pets are welcome on site.

Local attractions

The shops, restaurants and bars of former mining and logging town Susanville, the seat of Lassen County, are about 17 miles from Honey Lake Campground; from here, you can drive on to Reno on US Route 395. Lassen County is home to the Ash Creek Wildlife Area, over 14,000 acres of marshland and field habitat with several species of waterfowl and plenty of places for fishing. There's also the Bizz Johnson National Recreation Trail, a 29-mile trail from Susanville to Westwood through forests for hiking, cycling or horse riding. More horse riding is available at BLM Wild Horse Corrals, on Highway 395 just north of Litchfield. If you're a fishing fan, angle a trip to the Caribou Wilderness area in Lassen National Forest, where there are over 20 lakes for fishing brook, brown and rainbow trout. This is also a tiptop spot for wilderness hiking, via the main access points of Cone Lake in the north, Hay Meadows in the south, Silver Lake in the east and the trails of Lassen Volcanic National Park to the west. Or might you prefer skiing? Coppervale Ski Area is 14 miles west of Susanville on Highway 36. Or golfing? Tee off in scenic surrounds at Diamond Mountain Golf Club, Susanville's 18-hole championship golf course, edged by pine trees and at the foot of Diamond Mountain.
