Run along to the Poconos region of Pennsylvania for a sweet stay among woodland and mountains, hiking and canoeing, fishing and swimming… from a peaceful and friendly resort so scenic you might reckon you're staying in a national park.

Set on 65 acres of woodland among the Pocono mountains, Cranberry Run Campground is a family campground 10 minutes' drive from the Monroe County town of East Stroudsburg, 20 minutes' drive from the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area for hiking, canoeing, kayaking and rafting. Shops, a casino and – for bargain hunters – an indoor flea market are all within 15 minutes' drive.

Take a look at the pics to see just how hugely scenic this resort is, with loads of space to roam, a pond to fish (or daydream) at, and greenery all around. There's an outdoor pool for idle days at base, along with a playground to occupy non-idle kids, and a games room with arcades, air hockey, a pool table and a fireplace.

Cranberry Run also has a shop selling camping supplies. Barbecues and campfires are allowed: guests can buy firewood from the team and use the on-site propane filling station.

Location, view - my site was "lake front" and had a lovely brook running through it. Staff were courteous and professional.

Disliked:

Close to road - could hear cars late into the night
The "bathroom" for this part of the campground had no showers and the door did not fully close
Requested a "hammock friendly" site when I made my reservation (what do you need to hang a hammock? 2 trees somewhere on the site that have about 12-18 feet of clear space between them). My site, while beautiful, was not good for a hammock...surrounding trees were dense with heavy undergrowth.

Liked:	Loved the location and the fact that they deliver wood and ice to your site. It's beautiful location and very friendly.
Disliked:	The sites were a little small and very rocky where we were. To be fair, we did have a big tent, so couldn't park our vehicle on our site with our tent. Our site was between 2 small hills, which was nice to be isolated, but didn't give us a lot of options to move things around. We will definitely be back, knowing which sites now that will work for us.

Liked:	The campground offered all of the privacy and nature expected from a primitive campsite. Our trip was really made by the wonderful customer service of the staff and the abundant amenities offered.
Disliked:	We were so glad we ended up in the outer field campsite as all of the other sites were right on top of each other.

We really enjoyed our stay at the campground. The place is well groomed. We chose the primitive campsite. Our site was clean and ample. It was what we hoped. The bathroom facilities were clean as well. The staff was consistently helpful and kept just enough presence to keep us feeling safe and secure. We can see the park has all different styles of camping you could try, the little cottages were tempting. We will camp here again. Thanks for the enjoyable weekend.

Local attractions

Get down to Mount Airy Casino Resort (15 minutes' drive) to try your luck on the tables or catch one of its regular evening shows; if you're into shopping for unusual souvenirs, spend a weekend day antiquing around the indoor flea market at Wind Gap, also 15 minutes' away.

Outdoor adventurers have loads to pick from over at Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area, including hiking, canoeing/kayaking, rafting, fishing, hunting and photography, as well as ice climbing, skiing and snowshoeing during the colder months.

The longest hiking-only footpath in the world, the Appalachian Trail, can be picked up 20 minutes' drive away at Bangor, just past the Delaware Water Gap. Take the three and a half-mile part of the trail from Wind Gap to Fox Gap, or prepare your most determined face to tackle the 16 miles from the Wind Gap to the Delaware Water Gap, described by one weary hiker as 'the most brutal' part of the path.

More hiking trails are around Bushkill Falls (25 minutes), also home to a museum on the history of the Delaware Native American.
