A gentle word of warning: you may find you’ve got a somewhat lengthy packing list for a stay at Norraryds Camping. This place on the shores of Hönshyltefjorden Lake in southern Småland is such an excellent spot for outdoorsy antics that if you pack too lightly you may live to regret not bringing your bike/boots/binoculars/rods for days of cycling, hiking, birdwatching or fishing... You don’t need to go overboard with the kit though; next door there’s an activity centre that can sort you out with canoe or kayak hire for nearby Åsnen Lake, or an assortment of outings including climbing, rafting and caving. And if you’re sticking around for a bit, it’s easy to stock up on foodie supplies at the supermarket and bakery in Ryd, a few minutes’ drive away. Worry not about getting tired and mucky on your days out – back at base there’s a sauna to soothe sore muscles, and a bar-café where you can chill out with a hot drink or a glass of something stronger out on the terrace while the sun goes down (along with a playground to entertain any tiddlers who’ve still got reserves of energy). Hot showers, toilets, a washing-up area and a launderette are all on site too to keep you and your clobber squeaky clean.

Local attractions

Come here for a full smorgasbord of alfresco activities: Åsnen Lake, 10 minutes away, and the adjacent Mörrumsån river make up one of Sweden's best fishing areas, with salmon, pike and trout among the prospective catches. Hikes and bike rides can be had directly from the site to seek wildlife in the woods or take in some of the scenic views around the Åsnen Nature Reserve. Have a word with the folk at the neighbouring activity centre for guided hikes or days of climbing, caving and kayaking. If all this back-to-nature time has inspired you to craft something with your hands, you can make an easy start by learning a bit more about the art of flatpack furniture with a visit to the IKEA Museum, half an hour away in what was once the multinational chain’s first store.
