- Dog-friendly site a 10-minute walk from Espot, in the Catalan Pyrenees
- Mirador de L’Estany 15 minutes’ drive; Cascada del Gerber 25 minutes
- Barbecues provided; food shop; launderette and drying room
On the outskirts of the town of Espot (10 minutes’ walk), Camping Solau is the place for anyone eager to spend some time amid the imposing beauty of the Catalan Pyrenees. Run by attentive couple George and Veronica, this peaceful, dog-friendly spot in the valley carved by the Riu Escrita has grassy pitches shaded by tall trees.
The rocky massif of Els Encantats, part of Aigüestortes i Estany of Sant Maurici National Park, looms large above the site, inviting hikers to explore the local trails, which lead through densely forested peaks to stunning lakes like the ones in the Presa de l’Estany Negre area (20 minutes’ drive), waterfalls like Cascada de Ratera (15 minutes) and observation points such as the Mirador de L’Estany (15 minutes).
Beyond hiking, active types can have a go at mountain biking and climbing; the landscape of the area, dotted with bodies of water, also lends itself to watersports such as canoeing. Meanwhile, anyone who wants to wind down can find a spot on the banks of the Estanyet de Gerber de Baix pond (25 minutes) and spend a few meditative hours waiting for the big one to bite.
Wildlife enthusiasts also have much to look forward to here, since the area is home to chamois, stoats and lizards, while birdwatchers ought to keep their eyes peeled for ptarmigans, partridges and vultures.
In addition to a toilet block and showers, Camping Solau has a washing-up area, a launderette and a drying room, plus recycling facilities. Barbecues are provided, and there’s a small food shop on site, plus a supermarket (and a handful of restaurants) in Espot.

Local attractions
Parc Natural de l’Alt Pirineu (20 minutes’ drive), the largest nature reserve in Catalonia, is home to the Avet del Pla de la Selva, a huge fir tree that’s been classified as a Natural Monument. As you wander through the area’s forests, you might bump into salamanders, otters and red kites.
Trails and boardwalks lead to the Cascada del Gerber (25 minutes), the highest waterfall in Aigüestortes i Estany of Sant Maurici National Park. You might well get splashed by the roaring waters thundering down the forested slopes (even from the observation point), so make sure you have waterproofs or a change of clothes with you.
Aigüestortes is an important hub for Romanesque art. The area of Vall de Boí (two hours) is dotted with monumental buildings like the 12th-century Church of Santa Maria de Taüll, with its splendid frescoes, and Santa Eulàlia d 'Erill la Vall, known for its distinctive bell tower.
