General
- Peaceful, safe and secure farm park in the KZN mountains
- A 20-minute drive from Volksrust and 45 minutes from Newcastle
- Simple stands by a river for birdwatching and swimming
If stealing away to the mountains has long been on your bucket list, La Belle Esperance Adventure Farm is a quiet KwaZulu-Natal park in a safe and secure spot that’s privately owned (and with the owners living at the farm so they’re always on hand to help their guests).
Life is all very peaceful here in the mountains, with minimal traffic on the farm’s main road and a ban on loud music to make sure there’s nothing to disturb your stay. Instead you’ll most likely have a soundtrack of birdsong, which should set you up well for days spent biking, hiking, birdwatching and wildlife-spotting in the local area. Back at the farm is a river that’s got shallows for paddling and a deeper section to plunge into if you really need to cool off.
Facilities are fairly low-key at this farm, in keeping with the laidback style of the place, but guests will have access to toilets, showers, a washing-up area and a laundry area, along with internet access for planning all those outings.
As there’s plenty of space, campfires and braais are permitted at the park: Volksrust (20 minutes’ drive) is a handy place to pick up supplies, although you might also like to head a little further afield for the shops (and restaurants) in places like Memel or Wakkerstroom, or head to Newcastle (45 minutes’ drive away).

Local attractions
Have yourself a very historic hike on Majuba Mountain (five minutes’ drive), the site of the First Boer War, and kick off what could be a history-packed itinerary if you so wish… with the small historic town of Memel (50 minutes) and Newcastle’s battle sites and museums (40 minutes) no huge car journey away, you’ll have plenty of time for it…
If you’re not viewing the Volksrust (20 minutes) landscapes from above – as paragliding is popular in this area – down below are more historic attractions, including a steam train.
Add birds and hippos to your sightseeing list… your best chance to view them is in the splendid Seekoeivlei Nature Reserve (40 minutes). Otherwise, birdwatchers and history buffs will find plenty of species, historic buildings and museums in Wakkerstroom (35 minutes).
There’s more game in the Utrecht Balele Community Game Park (an hour), from giraffes and zebras to warthog and wildebeest.
After a lazier afternoon with the gang, perfecting your swing? There’s a golf course (20 minutes) within striking distance for such activities.
