Torn between town and country? No need to worry about such dilemmas at peaceful Camping and Camper Stop near Ljubljana. This campsite is tucked among gardens and fields with spectacular forest and mountain views, yet is only 15 minutes’ drive from the centre of Ljubljana. Set on a working farm, the spacious pitches are available on two parking levels and site amenities include optional electric hook-ups, drinking-water taps, modern showers with reliably hot water, washing-up sinks and a self-service laundry. Barbecues are permitted at the pitches, but there’s an informal eatery with a covered terrace overlooking forested peaks if you’re not feeling the alfresco cooking vibe. There’s also a restaurant offering traditional Slovenian dishes like schnitzel and gnocchi within striking distance (five minutes’ drive away in Dolsko), and of course, you could always have a big night out in cool Ljubljana bars. You can book on-site yoga sessions during high season, when bike rental is available too – the welcoming site owners will be pleased to advise you on where to go and what to see.

Liked + very clean bathrooms
+ there is a vast space for tents (it is a beautiful meadow in the middle of a valley), you are allowed to put your tent wherever you like (pitches are neither numbered nor limited by lines)
+ big terrace with shadow available to all guests; you can relax there, read, charge your phone, use your laptop or just enjoy the view on the valley and the surrounding mountains
+ very easy access to Ljubljana
+ the place is being constantly developed, one can see that the owners (really nice people!) are doing their best to level up the conditions; it is a family business and it shows
+ it is quiet
+ very good wi-fi

Disliked - there should be a clear sign (or a few) pointing the way to the camping; one can be mislead by the navigation apps (depending on which one you use - for example, Tom Tom leads you up the hill, so be careful using this one, especially if you travel with a caravan and might have problems with turning back on narrow ways!)
- bring an anti-insect spray with you; remember it is a meadow full of life, so you can expect all kinds of flies and mosquitos ;-)

Small enough to explore on foot, gorgeous Ljubljana (15 minutes’ drive) may well be your first stop. Stroll around streets lined by pastel-hued buildings and along the Ljubljanica River to get your bearings before taking the funicular up to the hilltop castle for views over red rooftops. Have a whizz around the decorative arts and Impressionist paintings at the National Gallery, or check out the ornate baroque interior of the Cathedral of Saint Nicholas. Wind up your sightseeing with a selfie by the famed Dragon Bridge and then put your feet up with a cold beer in a riverside café. For more rural pursuits, grab your walking boots and head up through forest to the peak of Murovica (10 minutes), and it’s also well-worth the climb up the metal viewing tower at Rašica (45 minutes) for spectacular views over the Julian Alps.
