  • Grass pitches at a small, peaceful site in rural Maramureș
  • A 15-minute drive to Ocna Șugatag; Bârsana Monastery 35 minutes
  • On the edge of Breb, one of Romania's best-preserved villages
It’s almost like stepping back in time when you stay at Babou Maramures. This small-scale site sits within the grounds of a hostel in one of Romania’s prettiest villages, Breb. The village is known for its well-preserved medieval architecture, its adherence to local traditions and its warm hospitality – visit at the right time and you’ll come across a festival or church event with everyone dressed in traditional outfits. The campsite, just on the edge of the village, is similarly traditional in style – it's a place where you can chill out in peaceful surroundings, play with the resident animals, read a book in a hammock, spend the evening cosying up by the campfire… The grass pitches here are unallocated, so you'll be able to pick the spot you most like the look of – there’s plenty of space, shade and scenery for everyone. The owners (a Dutch-Romanian couple) have chosen to keep things pretty simple to allow everyone to soak up the peace and fresh air, but they’ve got all the essentials sorted: you'll have access to a launderette, a communal kitchen and a bathroom block. As for getting out and about, the owners are full of great ideas and advice for guests, and they have bikes available to hire as well. The village has a couple of restaurants, some small shops and a whole host of fresh produce stalls in season – all of it within a few minutes’ walk of the site. For more amenities, head to Ocna Șugatag (15 minutes’ drive), Mara (25 minutes) or Sighetu Marmaţiei (40 minutes).

Local attractions

The local village, Breb, must be your first port of call – it’s perhaps at its best on a Sunday, when locals dress in their colourful traditional outfits for church, but on any day it's a wonderful place to wander around, going past orchards and over wooden bridges, and looking out for traditional crafts and farming practices. The countryside around the village is lovely too – head out on foot, take your bikes or go horse riding to see some of the scenery and wildlife around Mount Gutai and beyond. The wider Maramureș area is also known for its wooden churches and traditional crafts; the campsite owners will point you towards the best ones. Further afield, you may like to visit the 18th-century Bârsana Monastery (35 minutes’ drive), look out for the wooden crosses in Săpânța (55 minutes) or ride the Vișeu de Jos steam train. And if all that leaves you a bit tired, take a break in Ocna Șugatag (15 minutes), a spa resort with mineral waters and treatments.
