  • Bihor County site with spectacular views of the Apuseni Mountains
  • Farcu Crystal Cave and Cheile Lazuri via ferrata 15 minutes’ drive
  • Communal kitchen and dining terrace; regional cooking available
There’s a lot that’s special about La Busuri Camp, 10 minutes’ drive from Roșia in north-western Romania’s Bihor County – but probably what’s most special is the utterly stunning view. From the pitching field – itself slightly sloping – you can see over forested foothills to the Apuseni Mountains on the horizon. The communal kitchen is also special – it’s on a converted bus and equipped with everything you need, from cutlery and dishes to a refrigerator, washing-up sink, stove, microwave oven and sandwich maker. There’s also a spacious terrace where you can eat, drink and make merry with new-found friends while soaking up the mountain vistas. Something else that’s special? If you’d like to try traditional Romanian cooking, the site owners can provide meals for you; please just place your order at least 12 hours in advance. And when it comes to practicalities, there’s 24/7 access to the shower block, which has separate amenities for men and women, each with two toilets, two basins and a shower with hot water guaranteed. Other perks of staying at La Busuri Camp include free parking, wifi across the site, a firepit (bring your own firewood), and sockets for charging devices on the panoramic terrace and in the kitchen.

Local attractions

The local mountain range is the forested Pădurea Craiului, home to a vast network of limestone caves. If you’d like to explore underground, several are open for guided tours. Farcu Crystal Cave (15 minutes) is swathed in glittering calcite, while Vadu Crișului Cave (55 minutes) and Meziad Cave (45 minutes) both have an impressive array of stalactites and stalagmites. When you’d rather stay above ground, you can try out via ferrata climbing routes among the limestone karsts at Cheile Cuților (10 minutes) and Cheile Lazuri (15 minutes) – the latter follows the course of a small gorge. There’s also plenty of hiking through forests and across plateaus; take the testing route up to Izbucul Roșiei waterfall (an hour and 40 minutes’ walk), or try the gentle trail through the Dâlbii Valley (three hours). Cyclists get their moment too, with eight way-marked trails of varying difficulty through the Craiului forests. Guests aged 16 or over can hire bikes on site and set out to discover the untamed landscapes surrounding La Busuri Camp.
