Ah, Portugal... a mighty pretty place with a mighty amount of stuff to see and do. As is most certainly the case at mightily scenic Parque de Campismo Quinta do Convento in Fundão... it's surrounded by lush green groves and has spectacular views of Cova da Beira and the Serra da Estrela.

Wildlife watching, hiking are top picks here: the site's nearby city of Fundão (five minutes' drive away) is south of the Serra da Estrela Natural Park, the biggest natural conservation area in Portugal. Skiing's a swish option too at the Serra da Estrela just under an hour's drive north, and around 250 kilometres of marked trails meander around nearby mountain bike centre for cycling. Bikes can be hired on site.

Parque de Campismo Quinta do Convento is on the foothills of Monte de São Brás in the Gardunha mountain range. Make the site restaurant with balcony a very early aim, for alfresco eating among this splendid scenery, or sizzle up supper at one of the communal barbecues with foodie supplies from the Parque de Campismo Quinta do Convento supermarket or from the shops in Fundão.

Lots of lounging around should be done while on site too, at the outdoor pool or around the grounds while the kids burn off energy at the playground. A games room and TV room are indoors, and the site has free wifi.

    The site itself is lovely, set in trees on the hillside. The food in the site restaurant is phenomenal, really tasty and very reasonably priced. We didn't use the pool but it looked nice, a good size. The site is also very cheap.
    Disliked: 

    There are a few filthy old dilapidated caravans with ripped awnings dotted around the site, which are very off-putting on arrival. The site should have them removed or stipulate that owners keep them in decent condition. For such a small site the bathrooms should be better taken care of.

    Brilliant. Pool absolutely superb. Reception could not have been more welcoming and so friendly in spite of being the guard as other person was on his lunch break. Also could not believe how cheap it was. Would recommend to anyone.
    Disliked: 

    Only problem was toilets got blocked due to some folks putting wrong items into the pan.

Local attractions

An adventure park with tree climbing circuits is nearby, along with a climbing wall, mountain biking trail and a mountain bike centre. For walks, try the (fairly tough) historical route of Alpedrinha-Castelo Novo  or have an even headier time hiking the peaks of the Serra da Gardunha.

Otters, wildcats, badgers and bullfinches are among the species to spot at the Serra da Estrela Natural Park, home to Portugal's biggest mountain range. For sightseeing, drive about half an hour north east of the site to the Serra da Estrela's highest peak Torre: if you've been hiking or climbing so far, you might be chuffed to hear that the summit can be reached by car via Regional Road 339...

Nearby Fundão has enough to do to keep all tastes occupied, such as the José Monteiro archaelogical museum and its collections covering millennia of human history in the region, or the plays, concerts and exhibitions of A Moagem. Just outside town and 20 minutes' drive from the site is Castelo Novo, one of the 12 Historic Villages of Portugal.

Admission
Admission is only permitted after registering at reception.
All guests spending the night at the park must present their ID at the reception desk and sign registration forms.

Extras
All units: access to the swimming pool is not included in the rate and is charged €2,50 (R51,24) per adult and €1,50 (R30,75) per child per Session.

Dogs
A valid vaccination certificate must accompany your dog.

Safety
Barbecues are permitted but must be raised off the ground and attended by an adult at all times.

Dogs
Dogs are not allowed in the on-site accommodations.
Dogs are required to wear a muzzle.
Dogs must be kept on leashes and supervised at all times.

Occupancy
Group bookings of 20 or more adults are not permitted (couples and immediate family members excepted).
Group bookings of 20 or more units (e.g. tent, touring caravan, motorhome or accommodation hire) travelling together are not permitted via Pitchup.com.

Dogs
Guide dogs are allowed on site free of charge.

General
In the event of a complaint, please speak to reception immediately. Complaints which are not brought to the management's attention during your stay cannot be dealt with once you have left the site.

Arrivals and departures
Late arrivals must notify the park as soon as possible. Your booking will be held for 24 hours. After this period the management reserves the right to relet your unit.

Vehicles
No vehicle movement between 11 p.m. and 8 a.m..

Safety
Open fires are prohibited.

General
Quiet hours must be respected between 11 p.m. and 7 a.m..
Radio, music and TV players must be kept at a low volume. Car doors and trunks must be closed quietly.

Reception
Reception is open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. between 01/01 and 31/12.
Reception is unmanned after 9 p.m.. Please inform the park while on your way there should you expect to arrive after this time, so that the team can provide information about your unit/pitch.

General
The management reserves the right to deny access or terminate the stay of those guests whose behavior is deemed unsuitable. No refunds will be offered.

Pool
The outdoor swimming pool is open between 01/06 et 20/09 (subject to weather conditions).

Dogs
The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act (i.e. Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro) and/or any of the following: Staffordshire bull terrier, American Staffordshire terrier, Rottweiler, any Mastiff or Tosa.

Taxes
This area is not subject to city tax.

Admission
Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

Sites
Units should not be left unoccupied unless previously agreed with the management. Please speak to reception when the need arises, a fee may be charged for unsupervised units.

Visitors
Visitors must leave the premises by 8 p.m..
Visitors must register at reception and pay their fee.

You must follow management instructions when setting up your tent/rig and related equipment.
