- Stay at a private conservation forest on the edge of Oxapampa
- Waterfalls, viewpoints and native communities within a half-hour drive
- River swims, ecological trail to follow and monkeys to see on site
Stay at Casa de la Permacultura and you’ll be on the edge of the city of Oxapampa – not that you’d be aware of an urban area being close by when you’re surrounded by such lush greenery and gorgeous views.
As the city’s last wildlife refuge, this is a place that’s all about biodiversity, with a fabulous range of native plants throughout the site and lots of wildlife to be seen – including birds and monkeys. Settle in here and you’ll be able to immerse yourself fully in this natural setting, perhaps taking a walk on the ecological trail, having a dip in the river that runs through the site or just finding a quiet corner to relax and soak up the views and the atmosphere.
Preserving the natural environment is key here, but so is providing a comfortable and convenient stay for guests. With that in mind, you’ll have access to a good range of facilities including a launderette, a washing-up area, wifi and a bathroom block with toilets and showers. A barbecue area and picnic tables are provided too, so you may like to pick up supplies at the shops in town while you’re there – although you may sometimes prefer to eat in one of the restaurants instead.
While there’s always something to see on site, there are also plenty more sights to explore in the local area – this region is dotted with fabulous waterfalls, and there are also some wonderful viewpoints and some native communities to visit.
The wildlife-rich setting is bound to bring some memorable moments, but it’s not recommended for guests with allergies or those who are sensitive to insects.

Local attractions
The area around Casa de la Permacultura is stunning – with particular rewards for those who are fond of waterfalls. Take your pick from the area’s many cascades for a walk (and a dip in some cases: Catarata Río Tigre (half an hour’s drive) is one of the closest, but you may also like to fit in trips to Catarata Cueva Blanca (an hour and 10 minutes), Catarata Anana (an hour and 20 minutes) and Catarata La Bruja (an hour and a half).
If you’re short of time or don't want to navigate alone, you can join organised tours from Oxapampa (10 minutes). Some focus on nature expeditions, visiting viewpoints and saltwater pools while others will introduce you to native communities such as the Yanesha and Ashaninka, or take you to Villa Rica to learn about the area's coffee and chocolate production.
It's worth spending a bit of time in Oxapampa too – it was founded by Austrian and German settlers in the 19th century, so it’s got some intriguing European-style architecture.
