You can stop the search right here if you're looking for a North Holland site with wild swimming on site and gorgeous landscapes (tulips and cheese towns included) a short drive away. EuroParcs Markermeer is in a sheltered spot in North Holland and looks out over gorgeous Dutch waters where flute ships once passed by. The ships no longer sail here; instead, guests frolic in the water and retreat (dripping) back onto the grass to soak in the atmosphere.
On the shore of the Markermeer and with views over a polder landscape formed over the centuries, this place is all about the outdoors. The surrounding West Frisian woodlands make for particularly scenic scrolls and cycles (and handily enough, there are bicycles available to hire from the site).
Children can let off steam in the playgrounds on site and all can refill in the snack bar when their stomachs start to growl. Other creature comforts across the site include wifi and fishing facilities. Oh, and those drooling at the idea of a barbecue will be pleased to know that they’re welcome to get grilling on site.
While wild swims in the water and peaceful pedals make for lazy afternoons, livelier days out are not far away at all. Pick your way around the 16th-century fortress walls in the scenic town of Enkhuizen (40 minutes’ walk), where there are watersports on IJsselmeer Lake.
Along with Hoorn (20 minutes’ drive), there’s plenty of traditional Dutch culture in the towns. Hoorn has a 17th-century town centre, where you’re sure to find a café or shop selling bitterballen or another tasty snack too. Of course, with famous cheese destinations like Edam (half an hour) around too, your snacks might consist of a few cheese boards.

Shuttle the kids off to Sprookjeswonderland (10 minutes’ drive) for a day of entertainment on rides themed around fairy tales and greeting the furry creatures in the petting zoo.
Venhuizen (10 minutes) has rainbow-coloured fields of over 300,000 tulips. A tour will show you the machines used throughout the years and you might get to pick a few tulips too. Edam (half an hour), of course, is famous for its cheese. Visit the 18th-century cheese warehouses and browse the cheese markets to sample some yourself.
There’s more for more cheese fans in Alkmaar (40 minutes), including a cheese museum and traditional cheese market. If you’re not too full from all the dairy treats, Medemblik (20 minutes) is yet another hot spot for watersports on the lake (or perhaps a visit to the Dutch Steam Museum).
