  • Family-friendly site in scenic Twente, two minutes’ drive from Germany
  • A 10-minute drive from Ootmarsum; 25 minutes from Nordhorn, Oldenzaal
  • Stables, go-karting, animal meadow, and a communal space serving food
Fancy hols in Twente, within easy reach of trails through the scenic eastern Netherlands and into northwestern Germany? Make haste for Camping Dal van de Mosbeek in Mander, 10 minutes’ drive from Ootmarsum and 25 minutes from Oldenzaal in the province of Overijssel. Inside Landschapspark Noord-Oost Twente, this is a prime spot for anyone keen on getaway explores: a path leading into the encroaching forest will give dog-owners a convenient outlet for canine energy build-ups, a challenging mountain biking route leaves from the site, equestrian types should be chuffed to explore nearby bridleways (and stable mounts on site), and there are plenty more hikes and bikes in the immediate vicinity. If an active break isn’t on the cards, never fear – there’s plenty to entertain on site. The former dairy farm has been well adapted for guests, with modern sanitary facilities (complete with underfloor heating, so no cold toes after showers), a well-designed playground, and table tennis, boules, football and volleyball for sporty types. Kids in need of further distraction? Send them along to play on the go-karts, meet the goats and rabbits in the animal meadow, or zoom along the zipwire… There’s a healthy dose of history here too, with a National Monument-listed bakspieker (baking house) from the 16th century housing reception. Thoughts of baking bread conjuring hunger pangs? Head to the supermarket, butcher and baker in the nearby town of Vasse (less than five minutes away), or call in to the communal space on site to grab a coffee, snack or ice cream, then unwind on the outdoor terrace with a book from the library.

Local attractions

Start stays in the nearby art town Ootmarsum (10 minutes’ drive), where there are galleries and museums to view, an open-air museum to be explored, and an observatory where turning gazes to the stars is encouraged. A little further afield, trips to Oldenzaal and Germany’s Nordhorn (both within 25 minutes) are recommended for the former’s shopping pedigree and the latter’s canals and zoo, and history-filled days can be spent 40 minutes from base in Bad Blentheim. Peaceful countryside days can be had five minutes away at de Manderveense Aardbei (if picking berries for healthy desserts appeals), or at de Broekbeke fishing ponds (10 minutes) if an even more soothing day fits the bill. Prefer to get adrenaline spiking? It’s around 40 minutes to the rides at Slagharen and Hellendoorn theme parks.
