General

  • Peaceful family-friendly park on the banks of the Rhederlaag
  • A 45-minute bike ride from Arnhem and the Veluwezoom National Park
  • Private beach with swimming area, watersports and fishing

A private beach – the height of luxury? Have it for a wallet-pleasingly small number of euros by staying at Recreatiepark Rhederlaagse Meren, which has its own splendid sandy stretch on the Rhederlaag.

Swimming, fishing, sailing and watersports are all on hand at the lake for those with an appetite for activity – as is plenty of waterside space for those who’d rather settle in for a period of doing not a lot, thanks very much...

Away from the water’s edge there’s another opportunity to get wet at the outdoor pool, with a separate paddling pool for the small sorts to splash in and a comfy grass area all around for those tasked with supervising. Grownups can then towel the tiddlers off and pack them off to the playgrounds, or to brush up their ball skills at the tennis court or panna court. Activities galore are also at their disposal in summer at the kids’ club.

Feeding needs are well served here too: the central food court houses a restaurant, a burger bar and a cosy café-bar, as well as a shop that’s stocked with fresh meat, veg and bread baked inhouse each day.

When it’s time to venture out, it’s a leisurely 45-minute bike ride along the banks of the IJssel river to Arnhem or to the forests, sand dunes and heathland of Veluwezoom, the country’s oldest national park.

Very helpful staff who went out of their way to help us change our ferry back home. Lovely lakeside with wild birds. Exceptionally good toilet shower facilities.

    Disliked:

Arrived at 7.30pm due to Belgium traffic and we had to sleep in the car in the street overnight. It would be good if they had an emergency pull in for overnight stay.

  • Electric grass pitch (water hook-up)

Lakeside pitch was East facing and fabulous for 06:00 sunrises.
    Beach 10 metres from pitch.
Flat, easy and safe cycling into Arnhem (about 10K away)
Fabulous evening sight of hundreds of geese returning to the lake.

    Disliked:

Dodgy electric supply ( fridge wouldn't connect until fired on gas first and cut out 2 or 3 times in 2 days we were there).
Friends on next pitch had exactly the same electricity issue.
Water supply on a timed push tap with no threaded hose connector which meant we had to fill fresh water tank with a watering can.
Live DJ event on beach about 100m away (part of the sites entertainment, but not informed of this when booking).
We were out all day on the Saturday and Sunday so music didn't bother us
(although I understand that it played, very loudly, most of the day), however, at the end of the event a lot of people leaving were very drunk!. Urinating in the hedges, swearing and discarding litter and glasses. Not what you would have wanted your kids to have witnessed.
We decided to pop into the Bar for an early evening drink but as we approached the door a fight broke out between about half a dozen men. Needless to say we gave it a miss.
Toilet facilities, on site, as you can imagine that evening were not great and they didn't seem to have been sorted by the following morning.
Neither had the litter around the site from the crowds leaving.
No Shop or Supermarket on site as advertised, we were directed to a neighbouring site for the nearest shop.
Disappointing really for what could have been really nice few days at a great location.

Very private pitches with lots of space and great scenery.

    Disliked:

Showers not working, no staff on hand to help. Terrible directional map of the camp site which led us to drive around for 10 minutes. Overflowing bins in the toilets. Toilets a long way from pitches.

Local attractions

Start by taking the 45-minute bike ride (or 20-minute drive) into Arnhem, to wander through the Sonsbeek Park and visit the war museum, for an insight into everyday life during World War II.

A few kilometres out of town are Burgers Zoo and the Netherlands Open-air Museum, both of which are top places for a day trip with the nippers (or without – grownups will likely love the zoo’s apes and penguins too).

If you’d really like to get up close to the monkeys, head up to Apenheul a 45-minute drive from the site, where more than 200 primates roam freely among the visitors. There’s plenty of wildlife to see in the Veluwezoom National Park too – red deer and wild boar are often spotted here, and it’s a lovely place for a hike, bike ride or horseback trek as well.
