- Quiet site by the Zeta river with views to Ostrog Monastery
- Easy access on good roads from Danilovgrad, 15 minutes' drive away
- River access for swimming and fishing; kitchen and launderette on site
What sort of view might you like to wake up to for your camping break in the Montenegro countryside? A river, maybe – or some mountains? Perhaps you’d prefer a historic religious building to give you a bit of early-morning inspiration?
Or… how about all three in one fabulous scenic spot? Well, that’s the excellent view you’ll be in for when you book a pitch at Camp Aquarius. This central Montenegro site is right on the banks of the Zeta river, with mountain peaks rising in the background and a lovely view up to the Ostrog Monastery, built into the cliffside many metres above the valley floor.
All of that adds up to a particularly fabulous setting for an outdoor break – and that location is improved even further when you learn that there’s easy access from good roads. Danilovgrad (15 minutes’ drive) is your nearest town, with a couple of supermarkets and several places to eat, and Niksic is about half an hour away.
Staying right by the river brings more benefits than simply scenic views, in this case. There’s access to the riverbank for fishing, and if you’re feeling brave you can also take a swim (just don’t forget that the water has come from the mountains so it’s likely to be rather refreshingly cold…)
If you don’t fancy a dip in that chilly water, you’ll be pleased to hear there are showers on site too (with warmer water) – part of a collection of handy facilities that also includes toilets, drinking water, wifi, a launderette and a small kitchen with space to relax indoors.

Local attractions
This is a very scenic area (as you can see from the pics), and there are numerous ways to get out and explore it – local companies organise guided hikes, cycle rides, horse rides, kayak tours and tubing expeditions, or you can find your own route for a walk to see some of the area’s wildlife (which includes around 20% of the country’s bird species).
The area has also inspired a number of monasteries – the most famous of those being the Ostrog Monastery (half an hour’s drive). This Serbian Orthodox Church monastery is built into the rock of Ostroška Greda with stunning views over the Bjelopavlići plain, and it’s the most popular pilgrimage site in the whole country.
Beyond that, there are also other monasteries such as Manastir Ždrebaonik (20 minutes), fabulous natural features like Slansko Lake (half an hour) and manmade attractions including the Emperor Bridge (half an hour) to take in. Keep your eyes peeled and you may spot a winery or two as you tour the area as well.
