‘Camping of the Sun’ – now, that’s a name that holds a lot of promise. Camping del Sole cannot promise great weather for your holiday, but it can certainly deliver on many other aspects. First and foremost, location: the site occupies a splendidly leafy spot on the south-eastern shore of Lake Iseo, in central Lombardy. Spacious shaded pitches come with direct access to a beach and spectacular views of the lake and the mountains beyond.
Watersports enthusiasts should not forget to strap their kayak or windsurf to the roof rack. No worries if you don’t have your own gear or if you’re travelling by plane: the site rents out paddleboards, canoes and pedal boats. It is also possible to hire a bike for a two-wheeled exploration of the local area.
There’s no shortage of things to do on site, either, especially when it comes to younger guests, with a colourful playground featuring large slides and climbing structures, as well as a lively kids’ club (plus a teens’ club). Then, of course, there’s the pools (yes – that’s pools, plural): a 25-metre pool for swimming laps, a toddler’s pool and a large basin with a waterslide. Organised activities involving the entire family include live music, sporting tournaments and dance parties.
With two restaurants and two bars, plus a shop selling local products, you shouldn’t need to stray too far from the site. But if you fancy dining out, there are several lakeside restaurants in nearby Iseo town (15 minutes’ walk).

Local attractions
The area around Lake Iseo is laced with excellent hiking trails. Start with Monte Cognolo (five minutes’ drive or a half-hour walk – to the base of the peak), whose forested silhouette looms large at the back of the site, or go hiking on Monte Isola (35 minutes), a mountain in the middle of the lake.
The Franciacorta wine region stretches just south of Lake Iseo, so it would be churlish not to pay a cheeky visit to the cellars to stock up on the award-winning sparkling wines produced here. Wineries like Bellavista and Ca’ del Bosco, both on the outskirts of Erbusco (15 minutes), offer tours and tastings.
Large, elegant squares dot the centre of Brescia (half an hour). They include Piazza della Loggia, with an astronomical clock crowning a long colonnade, and Piazza della Vittoria, with its 1920s fascist architecture. The Castello di Brescia, atop a wooded hill, houses the Risorgimento Museum, with displays on Italy’s 19th-century fight for unification.
