- Peaceful site surrounded by woods and with views of Lake Campotosto
- In the Gran Sasso National Park for hiking, biking and horse riding
- On-site restaurant serving home-cooked lunches and dinners
Imagine for a moment waking up of a morning and peeking outside, where the very first thing you see is a glorious view through the trees to the calm waters of the lake beyond.
Off you go then to Agricampeggio Cardito, where you can clap eyes on this every day in this woodland spot overlooking Lake Campotosto. This is a mighty peaceful place, surrounded by the 150,000 hectares of the Gran Sasso National Park and Laga Mountains. Hiking and biking opps abound, as do enticing little clearings ripe for plonking down with a glass of vino and taking in these swish sights.
Take your time with the lake-gazing while the kids let off steam at the playground or by availing themselves of all the space to have a bit of a run around. When they announce that they’re hungry, trot them over to the wooden hut that houses the site’s little restaurant for a good home-cooked meal. Further eating options are in the lakeside village of Mascioni, 10 minutes’ drive away, or you could drive to the Capitignano, 15 minutes away, to stock up on food at the supermarket.
A toilet block is close to the pitches and has accessible facilities along with hot showers to refresh weary hikers.

Local attractions
Having had a glimpse of what lies beyond you’ll no doubt be itching to get out and see more of your surroundings. On foot or by bike are the preferred options, using some of the national park’s miles and miles of trails. Start out by taking a walk on the nearby rope bridge for a clear view over the lake, then pick a route to suit your fitness level and desired timings. Suggested routes and maps are available from the local visitor info centre.
If you’d like to get out and about on a horse, a riding centre in Cittareale, 50 minutes away, has trekking days along local mountain paths. Whichever way you choose to explore, you’re likely to see rocky peaks, wildflower meadows, waterfalls and ruined old churches on your wanderings.
Heading out of the park itself, there are several historic sites that may pique your interest. The Roman amphitheatre at Amiternum, 40 minutes away, is an impressive ruin with a little exhibition in Italian and English.
A little further away (50 minutes’ drive) is the town of L’Aquila, which has been extensively restored since the earthquake of 2009. Take a walk around the Old Town, visit the castle and peek into the various churches as you pass. They love a good water feature here too – make a beeline for the Fountain of 99 Water-pipes and, if you’re here after dark, the colourful display of the Fontane Luminosa.
