- A 35-minute drive from Saxon Switzerland National Park and Dresden
- Restaurant on site with daily-changing specials and regional food
This place certainly has the feel-good factor, whether that’s dining on fresh regional cuisine on the terrace or cheers-ing to a day on the paddle steamer on the Elbe River in historic Pirna. Just 10 minutes’ drive away from Pirna and 35 minutes from Dresden and Saxon Switzerland National Park, Campingplatz ‘Altjessen 57’ is well-maintained and quiet.
The dog-friendly site also has an eye for detail; the facilities are modern and cosy. Chill out by the pond, pool or on the terrace. All the catering is taken care of on the property in a stylish public restaurant with daily-changing specials, seasonal highlights and also food of the vegan and vegetarian variety.
There’s fresh regional cuisine available in Mediterranean style, as well as a fine selection of drinks for those who aren’t peckish yet. In the high season, plant yourself down on the gorgeous pool terrace too.
In Pirna, you might have already tasted a few of the traditional beers in the brewery or spent a day admiring art by Canaletto or touring the mighty Sonnenstein Castle. Dresden, 35 minutes’ drive away, has a cluster of historic sites, including the Semperoper opera house, the Church of Our Lady and Baroque Zwinger Palace.
Active days out are very much available too. That’s because the Saxon Switzerland National Park, a place with table mountains, gorges, valleys, forests and boulders, is 35 minutes’ drive away from the site.

Local attractions
With eight different painter’s trails and 15 circular hiking trails, the Elbe Sandstone Mountains (50 minutes’ drive) are a dream for ramblers. The sandstone rocks and table mountains have been the inspiration for many an oil painting, after all. The Painters’ Way isn’t for the faint-hearted; it has iron ladders and bouldering on the route.
One stunning place among all of these gorgeous local landscapes is The Bastion Bridge (half an hour), a bridge balanced between giant rocks 194 metres above the Elbe river.
Schrammsteine (50 minutes) is another set of spectacular – this time jagged – rocks. Like the sound of the table mountains too? Pfaffenstein Nature Reserve (35 minutes) is based on a table mountain and has a circular wooded hiking loop.
On one of these hills is Königstein Fortress (25 minutes). It’s one of the largest hilltop castles in Europe, and it runs guided tours and culinary experiences for the foodies among you.
