Several hiking and cycling routes start from the site and plenty more are within easy reach around the local countryside and along the banks of the Moselle and the Rhine. For a gentle amble, wander around the many exhibits of the Rheinland-Pfalzisches open air museum 15 minutes' drive from the site (you can bike the 12 kilometres there if you're eager for more exercise). Serene days await among the thermal waters of Bad Kreuznach, 20 minutes away, a spa town with plenty of centres to pick from. There's loads to see in town after that, including a Roman villa, a puppet museum and many a medieval building; if you're around on Tuesdays or Fridays, the Kornmarkt is the spot for fresh local produce. Like Bad Kreuznach, Bingen 35 minutes' drive away is known for its wine, as well as for its Mouse Tower, festivals and the Roman villa in its surrounding forest. The curious could also have days out in Idar Obenstein (45 minutes), at its gemstones mine and the German Gemstone Museum; Rhineland-Palatinate capital Mainz (also within 45 minutes) and Koblenz, the fortified city on both banks of the Rhine (45 minutes). Three public swimming pools are within 10 kilometres.
