Pitches

  • Simple wild camping-style pitches at a small Maine-et-Loire site
  • Étang de Saint-Blaise and La Mine Bleue 15 mins' drive; Angers 40 mins
  • Dogs and kids welcome; stream alongside for paddling
Time to step away from the comforts of modern life and really get back to nature? La Petoire is a place where you can do exactly that. This rural Maine-et-Loire site is all about wild camping in a truly peaceful spot, with just a handful of pitches scattered between fruit trees, shrubs and aromatic or medicinal plants. This is very much a wild-style site, so there are no toilets or showers, and no access to running water. However, the pitches are spacious enough to allow you to set up an awning, gazebo, table and whatever other bits and bobs you need (please note no barbecues or open fires). Dogs and kids are very welcome, and there’s a collection of playground equipment available to borrow to entertain the latter. A small stream runs alongside the site, providing a nice cool place to relax and take a quick paddle if you like; you won’t be able to take a proper swim in there, but there’s an indoor pool 10 minutes’ drive away in Segré-en-Anjou Bleu and a lake beach at Étang de Saint-Blaise (15 minutes). There are also plenty of places nearby for a quiet walk, a bike ride or a bit of fishing. A small supermarket is about a mile from the site, but for most amenities (shops, supermarkets and places to eat) you’ll need to head into Segré-en-Anjou Bleu (10 minutes’ drive).

Local attractions

For a relaxed day out nearby, spend some time at Étang de Saint-Blaise (15 minutes’ drive), which has a lake beach, walks, mini golf and other activities. You could tie it in with a stop to see the ruins of Château de la Gravoyère or a trip to La Mine Bleue, where a mini train takes you on a tour of an old slate mine 126 metres underground. These three attractions are all very close to each other. If you’re a fan of grand buildings, you may like to stop by at Château de la Lorie (10 minutes) before heading on to places like Château du Plessis-Bourré (35 minutes) or Museum Robert Tatin (25 minutes), full of intriguing sculptures and gardens. More into the natural world? Try Refuge de l’Arche (25 minutes), Terra Botanica (35 minutes) or Le Jardin des Kangourous (45 minutes). There are lots of great options nearby for a full day out, too – Angers is about 40 minutes’ drive away, and both Nantes and Rennes a little over an hour. All three have interesting attractions to visit and plenty of places to eat or shop for local produce.
