- Loire Valley glamping in the grounds of a 17th-century farmhouse
- A 15-minute drive from Saumur and 50 minutes from Angers
- Fishing, canoeing, boating and kayaking from the Loire 200 metres away
Keen on peaceful stays in a traditional setting in one of the most spectacularly scenic parts of France? Make your way to Ecolodge la Maison Joulin, a family-friendly and family-run site 15 minutes’ drive from Maine-et-Loire's Saumur, on the banks of the Loire.
The safari tent here is in the grounds of a pretty 17th-century farmhouse surrounded by two hectares of green French countryside, so it should come as no surprise that stays will be particularly serene. All the comfy kit is provided, including a kingsize bed, solar lamps, heating and a bathroom with hot shower. They can come a taste of rural France too: on request, the site team can sort a lunch of rillettes and a homemade mason jar meal.
If prompted to venture off site, there’s plenty round here to choose from: start in Saumur, a well-known wine-producing town, to explore its cellars, pour a dram at its distillery, see into the past at its museum and wander around its château.
Prefer to get out on the water? The site’s less than 200 metres from the banks of the Loire, so fishing, canoeing, kayaking and boating are within easy reach, and excursions under someone else’s steam can be had on a boat tour departing from Saumur.

The Loire Valley is known among other things for its spectacular châteaux, and they’re in no short supply around here. The nearest is the 12th-century fortified chateau in Saumur, 15 minutes’ drive away, and the châteaux of Brézé, Montreuil-Bellay, Montgeoffroy and Brissac are all within about half an hour.
Pignerolle, Baugé, Serrant, Plessis-Bourré and Plessis-Macé chateaux are within an hour, but if stately mansions no longer entertain, there’s plenty more to do. Stick with history for a while with a visit to Rochemenier troglodyte village (25 minutes) to explore cave dwellings, wander the cloisters at Fontevraud Abbey (30 minutes), or make the hour-and-20-minute journey to the historical Puy du Fou theme park (France’s second-largest after Disneyland).
Of course, there’s more to the Loire valley than castles and history – there are also incredibly pretty villages that are absolute must-visits. Follow the river south to walk the narrow streets of Candes-Saint-Martin and Montsoreau, each half an hour from the site.
When less rural days are needed, it’s a 50-minute jaunt to the city of Angers, where there’s a ninth-century fortress, a cathedral, gardens, and plenty of museums and galleries.
