General

  • Set over 11 hectares in manicured grounds of a 19th-century château
  • A 35-minute drive from the Calais and Dunkirk channel crossings
  • Two pools, outdoor gym, pizza bar and cosy bar and restaurant

Peaceful, green and spectacularly scenic... Camping Château du Gandspette is a quiet countryside site set among the grounds of a 19th-century château, across 11 hectares of bloom-filled wooded parkland in the Caps et Marais d'Opale Natural Regional Park. The Calais and Dunkirk channel crossings are 35 minutes' drive away.

This park’s pleasant woodland setting makes for a pristinely peaceful stay: the site has spacious and landscaped pitches surrounded by mature trees, loads of green space and lots of blooms and hedges. Leisurewise, there are two outdoor pools (one heated), ping pong tables and tennis courts, as well as a multisports area and an outdoor gym; activities run in high season too.

Food is well sorted at the site’s well-appointed summer bar and restaurant, serving grilled meats and regional specialities such as Flemish carbonnade and potjevleesch, and at the snack bar for pizza and fries to eat in or take away. The bar and its viewsome terrace is where you can sink a drink or two (while watching major sports fixtures, if that’s your leisurely bent).

And if the scenery isn’t enough to rouse you from your slumber? Freshly baked bread is on sale every summer morn.

Well managed and friendly site. Just about an hour from Calais so ideal to stay on your first or last night in France as well as a great base to explore the area. The sanitaires are modern and clean. The site is spacious and well kept. Whilst the facilites are excellent, pools, bar, restaurant and kids area , the site is quiet and tranquil. We've stay several times an would not choose anywhere else in the area.

    Disliked:

4g not great but not their problem and wifi is paid for. One of the more expensive site we stay on.

Great setting, nice pitches in the woods. Feels like a smaller site than it is due to good layout. Well priced bar and take away. Good sized pool. We will be using again. Friendly staff.

The gentleman in reception gave outstanding customer service. Friendly, helpful and professional. Thank you.
Our pitch was spotless, toilets and showers areas were also immaculate.
A great site fir a college of nights before we drove to tunnel which was about 30miN a away and so easy to get to from this park.

    Disliked:

A site shop would have been helpful for essentials. Not a lot to do in the immediate area and we only had bikes to explore with. The world war 2 shelter is about 8 mi a away on a bike and definitely worth a visit!

Too much to list but then again this is our 4th holiday here. The ease of booking and flexibility during the times of uncertainty due to Coronavirus. Julien, the site manager is superb and so accommodating. The pitches were super (near to the toilet block which is always clean). The heated pool was closed for repairs this season but the cold pool was so inviting during our stay as it was lovely weather. The facilities/ bar/ recreation was great, even during COVID.

    Disliked:

Only gripe was that the hand wash basin outside the toilets near the chateau kept running out of soap which is not really acceptable at any time, let alone during the pandamic. Could I suggest 2 dispensers are installed perhaps?

Lovely big pitch in a shady position, toilet facilities were spotless and I liked that it had separate facilities for male and female unlike lot of French campsites. Restaurant served amazing local food which was reasonably priced. We stayed one night but definitely would go back.

    Disliked:

Due to covid they had removed the sun loungers from around the pool. Other campsites we had visited had left them but cleaned them in a regular basis I think the later was a better idea and I was disappointed with this campsites decision to remove them.

Local attractions

The region is well served by road, rail and sea connections, including services such as the Eurostar and several from major Channel maritime operators. Camping Château du Gandspette is 45 minutes’ drive from the Calais-Fréthun high-speed rail international station too, making one-hour journeys to London, 30-minute journeys to Lille and two-hour journeys to Brussels and Paris a cinch.

The site’s Caps et Marais d'Opale Natural Regional Park setting is tiptop for hikes and bike rides around the area, with the GR 128 hiking trail (between Wissant in France and Gand in Belgium) within easy reach. Horse riding, fishing and golf are available in Ruminghem and St Omer, and for kid-friendly days out, bowling, go-karting and theme parks such as Dennlys Parc at Dennebroeucq and Plopsaland de Panne in Belgium are all within an hour’s drive.

History buffs can take a trip to the Eperlecques Blockhouse, a kilometre from base, and the La Coupole bunker complex (aka the St Omer Dome) is less than 20 minutes’ drive away. Other war memorial sites and points of interest well worth a trip to include the Fortress of Mimoyecques, the 1939-1945 Museum at Ambleteuse, the Memorial Museum at Calais, the Atlantic Wall Museum in Audinghen and the Memorial Museum at Dunkirk.
