General

  • Peaceful family site three kilometres from Bray-Dunes beach
  • Less than 10 kilometres from Plopsaland De Panne theme park
  • Accessible sauna and hammam, games room and immaculate amenities

As if vast sand dunes and gorgeous sandy beaches aren’t enough, there’s the Belgian border, Eurotunnel terminal and port of Dunkirk all within a short drive of this northern France site... which is a well-hailed, welcoming and perfectly placed park a few minutes from the North Sea coastal town of Ghyvelde.

The Nord department’s Caravaning du Lac is well set up for cosy days in between all that, so do be sure to schedule in some time around base too. There’s an accessible sauna and hammam to sink into and steam at, and the site as a whole is highly praised for its cleanliness, friendliness and stellar location within easy reach of several tiptop destinations of the Opal Coast and Nord-Pas-de-Calais: ‘fantastic’, ‘a great find’ and ‘perfect’ are a teeny selection of the compliments heaped upon here by former guests.

Caravaning du Lac has been welcoming guests since 1982, to its peaceful and family-friendly setting three kilometres north of Bray-Dunes and the Belgian border, 15 minutes' drive from the North Sea seaside resort of Dunkirk, and 10 from the Plopsaland De Panne theme park. Eurotunnel access at Calais is 45 minutes away and the city of Lille is reachable in an hour.

As well as that sauna and hammam (where, quite frankly, you’ll probably spend the majority of your on-site time), there’s a games room and TV room for other indoor days, and a pétanque court for your fresh air (and French holiday) requirements.

The immaculately-maintained amenities include a launderette, washing-up area, disabled facilities, and (again, check out the reviews) clean and modern showers with lashing of piping hot water.

The owner could not have been more helpful, nothing was to much for him. The location was good, far enough away from the main road so as not to be noisy but close enough to make it convenient especially for a quick overnight stay.

If staying for a few days or longer the pitches were very large and you could be very comfortable.

    Disliked:

This is mainly a static site and with all the plant pots, etc that generally go with this type of site and cars park on corners it made for getting a large caravan around to a tour in pitch very difficult. The toilet and shower facilities were clean but sub standard.

A bit of time and effort spent on the toilets, etc and maybe putting the touring pitches close to the gate would make this a good touring site.

From the manager...

Hello Marie,
I do not agree with your comment, your waiting time was about 7 minutes according to our CCTV registration. Regarding our facilities, we have 2 building and one had a broken lavatory which should not have been available for the end users and has been repair.
Thank you

Hello Naomi

Thank you for your comments, hope to see you again.
Strange for the shower price as it is 1.5€ for 1 coin with 5 minutes.

Small site with great views and a perfect location for visiting Dunkirk and the Dunes. Amenities were clean and well maintained and the water was toasty. Friendly manager, who was able to quickly assist when we were unable to get our electric hook-up working!. Lovely location on the outskirts of a small quaint town. Very quiet at night, which was perfect.

    Disliked:

Slight delay trying the checkin, as unable to get hold of reception, but sorted quickly. Site may be tricky to navigate if you have a larger motor home or car and caravan, due to small roads on site. Small amount of unisex toilets and showers (two of each) so had to wait to use them, due to full touring pitches.

Quiet and peaceful site. Well maintained with lots of space. Hedges around the pitches.
Good site for touring the Dunkirk area.

    Disliked:

Inconvenient to have to take toilet paper and soap to the washrooms.
Clearer instructions on what to do with key fob when leaving as Reception closed. However we emailed the owner and he replied almost straight away.

We used this campsite for 1 night stop overs on our summer holiday this year post arrival and pre departure from Calais. Lovely little site which just managed to fit our caravan (24ft) through the one way system they have on site although we had dispensation to go the other way on departure because some parts are just to tight. You'd possibly struggle with anything longer especially without a mover like me. The owners where really welcoming and assisted us with pitch allocation and ensured we were set up comfortably. Park for the kids which they loved, shower/wash facilities were great, little cafe next door and short drive to local shops and sea front. Would definitely use this site again.

Very friendly, helpful owners. Pitch was large and had your own water pipe. Close to motorway. A five minute drive to the beach. A very quiet campsite.

    Disliked:

No toilet paper in the toilets, only 2 showers, which were in need of upgrading. €1.50 seemed expensive for a 5 min shower.

Local attractions

There’s so much to do around this part of France that you’ll probably want to extend your stay, or, if you’re a Brit, nip back across the Channel to beg extra leave from work before zipping straight back.

The splendid beaches around the Opal Coast, including the long stretches of Bray-Dunes, Zuydcoote, Malo-les-Bains and De Panne, will likely be a first stop; more sands are at historic Dunkirk 13 kilometres away, where there’s also a golf course, a museum and monuments relating to World War II.

An absolute must from here is the Dune Marchand National Nature Reserve, a few minutes’ drive or short bike ride to the north of the site, covering 83 hectares around Bray-Dunes, Zuydcoote and one of the dunes of Flanders. The reserve is a breeding ground for underwater seals and is home to over 300 plant species including orchids and alder trees: follow the marked trails, and drop into the visitor centre in Zuydcoote to find out more.
