  • Small and family-run woodland site at Teillet in the Tarn Valley
  • Lake Bancalié 15 minutes’ drive and UNESCO-listed Albi 25 minutes
  • Swimming pool and family activities; informal restaurant and bar
For an enticing blend of peace, family activities and a gorgeous Tarn Valley setting, little can beat Camping Les Monts d’Albi in the Midi-Pyrénées. This small-scale and family-run site is set in a forest of oaks and chestnuts in the sleepy village of Teillet, with all the accommodation options sheltered under the tree canopy so you’re protected from the midday sun. What’s more, the site’s altitude of 500 metres means that nights are mild rather than scorching hot, all but guaranteeing some decent shut-eye. There’s lots on site to amuse the kids: a mini-farm for encounters with cuddly donkeys and chicks, and a large play area with a climbing frame and sand pit. Older offspring can splash around and swim laps of the pool, the games room offers up table football and snooker, and there’s ping-pong or pétanque for family challenges too. And while there are barbecues available for alfresco cooking, parents can switch off from the business of catering altogether and make a beeline to the informal terrace bar; when you’d prefer to eat back at your pitch with the family, there’s a takeaway service too. It’s easy to explore off site; footpaths and biking tracks lead straight into the Tarn Valley from the pitches, and an equestrian centre is within 10 minutes’ drive for treks through the verdant countryside.

Local attractions

There are scenic hikes and cycle rides aplenty in the stunning Midi-Pyrénées around the site, but if you’d like to explore further afield, the spectacular series of cascades at Arifat Waterfall (20 minutes’ drive) are accessed by scrambling up a challenging forest path. More testing hikes can be found in the Albigeois foothills (half an hour), while easier on the legs are strolls around the shores of Lake Bancalié (15 minutes), where you can also kayak, wild swim and picnic overlooking the water. Days out with the kids might include a trip to the Espace Zoologique Exoticamis (10 minutes) to handle snakes and mischievous meerkats. If that’s too tame for your tribe, they can test their bravery on treetop rope courses and nets at Aventure Parc (20 minutes) instead. For a change of mood, head for UNESCO-listed Albi (25 minutes), a photogenic city straddling the River Tarn. Mostly built of red brick, its historic heart is centred on the impressive Sainte-Cécile Cathedral – be sure to go in to see the ornate Gothic vaulting and walls covered in rich religious frescoes. Other highlights of a visit include the 13th-century Palais de la Berbie, home to posters and caricatures in the Toulouse-Lautrec Museum.
