- Unusual Western-themed units in a peaceful 14-hectare estate
- A 10-minute drive to central Troyes, or cycle the voie verte bike path
- Archery on site; waterpark, forest walks and Champagne houses nearby
A taste of the old Wild West in the Aube area? Sure, why not – aside from anything else, the nomadic types that prowled the prairies knew a thing or two about how to make their movable digs comfy and warm.
Those classic styles have now rolled to a stop at Western City, in a green and pleasant spot just outside Troyes (about a 10-minute drive from the town centre). True to form, the character-packed accommodation here is designed to be nicely cosy – but with the 21st-century additions of things like wifi, electric connections and access to proper toilets.
There may not be any rolling plains to wander around here, but there is a rather fine 14-hectare park to explore, and if you’re feeling starved of proper Western-style antics you can have a go at shooting a few arrows around with the site’s archery kit (all rubber-tipped to make sure no mortal combat can take place).
When not busy playing cowboys and Indians on site, you may like to take some time to explore the area – starting with Troyes, which is best reached via the voie verte bike path that passes 100 metres from the park. More greenery-filled days are to be had in the nearby Forêt d’Orient Regional Natural Park, or you could go entirely the other way and head off to Paris – it’s less than two hours’ drive away, so definitely doable for a day trip.

Local attractions
Start by taking a wander around Troyes (10 minutes’ drive/25 minutes by bike) to check out the ornate cathedral, stroll by the Seine and poke around the various museums.
The town’s also a hub of info for visits to the area’s splendid Champagne houses – pop in here for details of where to go before plotting a course to places like Montgueux (15 minutes’ drive/25 minutes by bike), Les Riceys (55 minutes’ drive) or even to Épernay and Reims (both an hour and 15 minutes).
There’s plenty of fresh air around when you want to clear your head after all that sparking wine – take walks in the Forêt d’Orient Regional Natural Park (20 minutes), stopping along the way to view the Moulin de Dosches and bound around the crazy inflatables at Beaver Aquapark (25 minutes).
Book ahead at Aux Poils d’Assenay (25 minutes) and you can stop by to meet some fab furry creatures (alpacas, goats and extra-woolly sheep) and find out how their wool gets used. Château de Vaux (35 minutes) is worth a visit too, to see restoration work in action and roam around the splendid grounds.
