General

  • Well placed for the Emerald Coast 800 metres from Quatre Vaux beach
  • Half-hour drive from Dinard and ferry port at St-Malo
  • Play area, multisports court, ping pong and summer bread service

‘Certainly lived up to its name tranquille’ enthuses one previous guest – that’s quiet, for those not au fait with the local lingo, and excellent news for folks seeking a serene spot within striking distance of St-Malo; the ferry port is half an hour away.

Life is peaceful indeed at Camping Le Clos Tranquille, a Brittany site surrounded by woods and wildflowers and a 10-minute toddle from Quatre Vaux beach. Markets, shops and bistros are a 20-minute stroll away in Saint-Cast-le-Guildo, although if you’re here in summer you can order bread and croissants to be brought over to the site of a morning (thumbs up to a fresh and fuss-free petit dejeuner, non?)

In keeping with the site’s calm vibe, there’s a selection of low-key leisure activity to be had on site – perhaps a gentle game of pétanque, table tennis or shuffleboard, or getting to grips with locals’ fave palet (not a million miles from traditional pétanque). A playground and multisports pitch are on hand for nippers who need something a little more energetic.

Barbecues, a small grocery shop, a launderette and wifi at reception are among the amenities making life easy here; those who’ve visited before also recommend nipping down to the local mussel-harvesting beach for tiptop fresh seafood.

Excellent site with beautiful quiet beach a 5 minute walk away08/02/2020

The staff are very friendly and welcoming. I can only speak a little french and they where very patient with me so thank you for that! Every caravan has a private little garden, perfect for sunbathing with the loungers in your garden area and a park bench to eat your food outside.

The rooms are spacious and so is the bathroom. Just be aware there is no oven in the caravan, only a microwave and hob, but with planning for dinner ideas this wasn't an issue at all, just worth noting.

There is a football/basketball pitch as well as a couple of swings and a roundabout for children. There is also a table-tennis table and two areas for bowls. The children really enjoyed this area when not at the beach so it's a great addition.

The site is a 5-10 minute walk from the beach, in my view, the most beautiful scenic beach I have ever seen in my life. The sea is an incredible blue and so clear. When the tide is out you can watch the fisherman go out and in, in these massive land boats. The youngest really enjoyed seeing them work. Worth noting, the walk back to the site does include a 10% incline hill, so if walking is a real struggle save enough energy for that, or just drive down. There is loads of parking and it's all free. Also on the beach there is a toilet block and a shower, also free.

I would highly recommend this site for a really relaxed and peaceful stay. It's definitely worth the 5-6 hour drive from Calais if you're coming from that way.

    Disliked:

If I had to pick something, wasn't an issue for me, but for my eldest child, there is no free WiFi, it's €1 an hour BUT, you're on holiday! Tell the children to download stuff to watch before going.

Loved the area and beautiful beaches with one a five minute walk away. The site has big pitches and is quiet.

    Disliked:

This site is not for caravans. They have electric hook up but there was no where to fill the water barrels other than from a sink, no disposal for waste water and no facility for emptying toilet other than driving to their partner site a mile away! Luckily we were only there 4 nights and ended up letting the waste water soak in to the grass on the pitch.their partner site right by the local beach had all the facilities. Toilet and shower block was quite basic too. Would not recommend going here as better sites around the area.

The site has barrier control at the entrance you need 20 Euro for the key deposit. Site felt as safe as can be expected, all vehicles follow a one way system with a requested 10 kph limit which was generally complied with.

The general site was very clean. It is a mixture of camper-vans, tents and static units of various sizes, the latter being by far the largest section, these seem to be a mixture of short and long term residents. (It has to be said these units also tended to be the noisiest).

The size of the pitch we were given was excellent with tall hedges on three sides (#8) it was flat. More family arrived a day later, we asked if a pitch next to us could be booked, this was accommodated.

Basic facilities for the children (7&5) with additional gravel football / basketball court and two Pétanque courts.

Limited store has short open hours morning then afternoon with the usual ability in France to order bread, croissants etc for the following day.

Site was, whilst we were there generally quiet, but can understand why some reviews report noise.

Location was really good for the fantastic beaches and coastline. The closest beach is walkable but be aware it is a very steep hill on the way back (unless other reviewers know an alternative route). There is a small outdoor bar near the beach with limited opening hours. Just up from the beach there are public toilets a shower and a water tap.

Water was hot for showers, the block was cleaned daily in the morning.

I hope these comments are seen as constructive, they are also written from the view point of it being listed locally as a two star site.

Our first comment relates to a basic lack of communication on arrival, this is possibly due to the fact that so many of the residents are just that, resident. I’d guess that many of the static occupants are either there long term as stated above or return year after year possibly more than once. Therefore they don’t need the basics explaining perhaps this leads to complacency by those welcoming you.

A couple of examples of what we mean are as follows.

We booked an electric pitch, after spending time looking through the hedges on three sides several times we could not find the hook up. A walk back to the entrance and the colleague gave us the answer, it was not actually on our pitch but over the hedge through to the far side of the pitch behind us!?

A second example is we were there two days walking to the wash up / shower etc block for water until we stumbled upon a water tap 20 paces from our pitch.

We were provided with a basic site map these important elements could have been marked on as we were handed it.

We didn’t like having to walk through our neighbours pitch (right through the middle of their set up) to get to the electric hook up. This then had to be put down the side of their tent (which was pitched up against the hedge) then over or through the hedge between the pitches. Also if you arrived with a short lead there is no way you’d have been able to connect. The hook up was for three separate pitches.

The barrier token, if there was a way around it we were not told, you have to hand it back the day before if you are getting the early ferry. This is because of the shop opening hours to get your 20 Euros back. This means you cannot take your vehicle off site the evening before you leave, other than the beach nothing is really walkable especially with young children.

Lastly the toilet / shower block, note I started this section by mentioning it is listed as two star locally.

Call us old fashioned we’re fans of a toilet seat. We know European sites have mixed views on the need for them but when paying to stay, for me it’s a must, none here. Showers were very basic most didn’t even have a shelf for shower gel etc. Think the block could do with more than one clean per day, apologies if we missed it happening a second time.

Outside the shower block on two sides were the washing up sinks. Two issues whilst there were plenty of them not all had drainers and none had adequate hot water. Overall some money needs to be spent upgrading this area of the site.

These elements would mean we’d only book again if no other sites were available to try in area. We’d recommend to friends or family but would describe the above to enable them to decide.

Size of pitches very generous, very private, small site, reception open 6 hours a day with lots of unformation and a daily board. Staff friendly. Plenty toilets n sinks for pot wash. Mostly very quiet. Short car drive to local town.

    Disliked:

Facilities old and not cleaned as well as other sites. Debris, leaves in some areas were there all our stay.
Slightly noisy business adjoining site , at rear of pitches, noisy during week at start of day.

L,'auberge due ruin restaurant an expensive major disappointment in local town.

Local attractions

Being so close to the Emerald Coast it’s likely you’ll be wanting to spend a fair chunk of time on the beach or taking in the cracking coastal views. Quatre Vaux beach, a 10-minute stroll away, is your closest, but you may also like to take the 10-minute drive to Saint-Cast-le-Guildo for sailing lessons and other watersports (plus another fab beach) or Pen Guen for a scenic round of golf (and, yes, another fab beach).

Seaside strollers can take their walks on more than 30 kilometres of the GR34 coastal path; a couple of stables are within a 10-minute drive for the horse riders, as is an adventure park for those who’d like to see the scenery from on high.

Looking a little further away, it’s worth making day trips to the Belle Époque villas in Dinard, 25 minutes away, and the UNESCO treasure Mont Saint-Michel. Folks who like a seafood feast may like to head to oyster hub Cancale (45 minutes); and perhaps a flagon of local cider from around Pleudihen-sur-Rance (35 minutes) would be a good way to toast an evening back at base?
