  • Riverside site by the Saône, with easy access to the A6 and N6
  • In the Burgundy wine region, between Chalon, Mâcon and Cluny
  • A kilometre from Tournus and its famed abbey
Wherever you lay your hat in southern Burgundy, a trip to the famed old town of Tournus is one to tick off your holiday list. Set on the right bank of the Saône river between Dijon and Lyon, this comely Saône et Loire town is best known for its splendid 10th-century abbey, and is a centrepoint for Burgundy festivals, concerts and exhibitions throughout the year. Just to the north, Burgundy wines can be sampled to your vino-loving heart's content from among the Vignerons de l'Abbaye's bottles covering over 20 estates. To access all this with ease, book a stay at Camping de Tournus, right in the Burgundy wine region and only a kilometre from town. It's a couple of minutes' drive from Exit 27 on the A6 as well, to get to your Burgundy bolthole quickly or to be on the road easily again after a few days of stopoff on a longer French trip. Like the town, the site sits on the banks of the Saône, in a peaceful countryside setting away from heaving tourist resorts – and among traditional southern France villages and over 70 kilometres of local walking and cycling trails. A short stroll away is the public pool, where kids under 14 can splash around for free in July and August. A supermarket, bakery and Tournus restaurants are all within ambling distance too. For takeaways, and tips on trips to Tournus and the town surroundings, make your way to reception for a chat with the friendly staff and a bite from the snack bar.

Local attractions

Although it dates back to Roman times, Tournus is best known for its Saint Philibert Abbey, the only surviving group of 12th-century monastic buildings of its kind in Europe. Also a must see is Hôtel Dieu, the 17th-century hospital and its fab old apothecary, one of the oldest in France. Around Tournus, have a driving day or take a bike out among the traditional old towns and villages of the region, such as Cluny and its famed abbey; the department's biggest town at Chalon-sur-Saône, and Cormatin with 17th-century chateâu. The sand dunes and peat bogs of the Truchere-Ratenelle nature reserve are to the town's south east. If your main aim on a Burgungy hol is to investigate as much as possible of the Burgundy wine region, start off at Les Vignerons de l'Abbaye just outside Tournus, before day trips to other well-known vineyard areas such as those of Côte Chalonnaise or in the Mâconnais. And if you're around with the kids, Touroparc animal park is within half an hour's drive.
