Take a peek behind the scenes of a working vineyard at Wine Camp Hažić, based on a family farming estate in Croatia’s untamed Međimurje County countryside, and known for its apple orchards and quality, vegan-friendly white and sparkling wines. Here’s your chance to sample fine vintages, learn about wine production and taste homegrown apple juices (in summer), all while enjoying spectacular views over linden, chestnut and cherry trees in hillside woodland. The owners of the site are only too happy to share details of their business and let you join in with their daily life on the estate. With electric hardstanding and grass pitches, on site facilities include electricity, drinking water and grey-water sewage connection. There are separate loos and bathrooms (and even a washtub for your dog), as well as family-friendly extras like an on-demand laundry and drying services (extra charge), a kids’ playground and a communal firepit for grilling up dinner. There’s no need to cook though, as you can tuck into regional specialities including locally produced cured meats, cheeses and black bread at the cosy, wooden wine house with a panoramic balcony. You can also walk to the nearest convenience store. And of course, wine-tasting sessions (extra charge, available in several languages) can be organised for individuals, couples or groups.

Liked: Excellent facilities, clean spacious and modern. Good pitch size with services on each pitch. Superb location, friendly owners and wine tasting.

Disliked: Only minor grumble is the lack of privacy between pitches but I think the owner is aware of this and plans to improve it. Three restaurants within walking distance.

Electric hardstanding and grass pitch

Liked: What a great place, the views are lovely. The hosts so friendly. They gave us 4 big lovely apples from their orchard, invited us up for wine tasting but unfortunately it was so wet we couldn’t go up. The toilets and showers are immaculate.
I recommend it here 100%. There is a thermal resort at the bottom of the hill, we didn’t try this as again because of the weather. The same with the two restaurants close by. You have everything on your pitch, Electric and water and a direct drain if you have a pipe for the gray water. Fabulous.

Local attractions

For a chilled treat and pamper session, one of Croatia’s most famous spas is a ten-minute stroll away. You can easily spend a day at the Terme Sveti Martin, splashing around in the swimming pools or kicking back with massages and steam treatments in the wellness centre – you’ll need to book in advance and there’s an extra cost. The campsite is also an excellent starting point for cycling and hiking adventures in the scenic Međimurje hills, and with a bit of forewarning, you can enjoy guided bike tours (and bicycle rental) to the spectacular Hill of Mađerka observation deck. Happy to give ideas for day jaunts, the friendly site owners can also organise excursions for the whole family, with popular possibilities including the deer at Farma Jelena I Muflona (five minutes’ drive), or heading for the riverside, working Mill on the Mura (10 minutes). And this verdant spot is close to the pretty Slovenian town of Lendava (25 minutes) on the mutual border with Hungary – so you can visit three countries in one day, toottle around its mining museums and climb the Vinarium Tower for countryside views.
